Zenith STB Discretes - Sony's don't work!

I hope someone out there can help. I tried DWG's discrete codes for Power On/Off that he posted for the Sony HD-200. Unfortunately, although the units themselves are the same the remotes are different so those didn't work.

Anyone out there? I found a component CCF from John Joseph (thanks John!) which helped for all of the regular buttons, but I'd sure like to add a discrete On/Off to my Power macros. Especially because, unlike the Hughes STB's, this box actually cools down when you Power it off...

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Regards,
Steve

PS: I'm curious: how does one actually stumble onto discrete codes? Is it simply trial an error with the IR codes or is there a more sophisticated way???

Post, say the power toggle code from your Zenith so I can see what convention etc. Zenith follows.

Hi David,

Here's the Power Toggle for the Zenith SAT520. Thanks so much for your help!

Regards,
Steve

Power:
0000 0067 0000 0013 0014 00cf 0014 00cf 0014 0014 0014 00a7 0014 0014 0014 00a7 0014 00cf 0014 0014 0014 00a7 0014 00cf 0014 0014 0014 00a7 0014 00cf 0014 00cf 0014 0014 0014 00a7 0014 00cf 0014 0014 0014 112c

AFAIK, the only Zenith discrete power commands are found on their VCR and their very newest plasma displays that use the NEC protocol.

Rob Crowe, the creator of the unofficial OneFor-All site www.hifi-remote.com and hte JP1 group decoded the Zenith protocol a couple of years ago and the command posted is: (+ designates a One and the - a Zero)

Power:
0000 0067 0000 0013=Preamble

0014 00cf = Lead In

-0014 00cf 0014 0014 0014 00a7
+0014 0014 0014 00a7 0014 00cf
+0014 0014 0014 00a7 0014 00cf
+0014 0014 0014 00a7 0014 00cf
-0014 00cf 0014 0014 0014 00a7
-0014 00cf 0014 0014 0014 112c

Both the One and Zero use three burst pairs. There are 6-bits and only the VCR that has 7-bits has a discrete power command.

Hi Jon,

Thanks for the reply. Of course, you've totally lost me! Are you saying that, based on looking at the IR pattern that I posted above, there isn't a discrete On/Off for this new STB?

David: did Jon do what you said you might try to do if I posted the IR string?

Thanks for the help...

Steve,

Unfortunately, I think that there are no discrete commands for any of the Zenith set top boxes. Since Zenith is purportedly manufactuing the new Sony DSS receivers, I suspect David wanted to do what I did and look at the command to see if it was a Sony command (it's not) or NEC command (not that either) used in the new Plasma displays.

To be absolutey technically correct, I can only see that the signal is the unusual Zenith protocol and has 6-bits. AFAIK, the only discrete commands ever found using that IR protocol need an extra bit not contained in anything but the VCR version of the protocol. I can't look at the signal alone and say whether it has a discrete command or not.

Steve,

Jon is correct I wanted to see if it was a Sony or NEC protocol. If that was the case I or others could have given you the whole code set to try.

David
