can anyone explain in newbie language what a discrete code is ? do you always need one or what you would need one for ? and why most remotes don't generate them ? Is there a way around using them ? thanks for any help

Jimmy,

Since most remotes (including factory originals) don't generate them, you obviously don't "need" discrete codes and may safely ignore them if you wish. They only provide an opportunity to do extra things you couldn't do otherwise, particularly with regards to macros. Say you wanted to be able to press 1 button and turn everything off - let's say you have a tv,vcr, dvd, cable box, and receiver. You could program a button to generate the button sequence (macro) dvd off vcr off cable off rcvr off tv off. However, if you used traditional power (toggle) commands instead of discrete offs, if any of those devices was already off it would be toggled on - not what you wanted.
