Ok code hackers. I have a challenge for you!

After much messing around I finally discovered a discrete off code for my digital set top box. Unfortunately going through the entire 255 possible commands didn't reveal a discrete on code!

Am I correct in thinking that if there is a discrete off code, it must be possible to design a discrete on?

I have tried analysing the differences in the IR code of the standard "power toggle" code, and the discrete off code I found, but I cant find anything that would help me derive a discrete on.

Since I know very little about what part of an IR code means what, I was hoping one of you code experts here could have a look at the below codes and see if you can derive what the discrete on code might be. If so, please post it and I'll try it out.

Please help as I'm pulling my hair out here!

OK it is the NEC1 protocol device=32, sub-device=8 command 0 is Power toggle and command 97 is Off. Both toggle commands and off commands are the same. What is the set top box?

You can always use a macro to get a virtual discrete command On=Off/Power Toggle.

The obvious guess is either 96 or 98 for On so here they are:

How did you find it if going through all 256 commands didn't work?

Thanks for your help Jon. Unfortunately neither of the codes you provided worked as discrete on.

Function 96 worked as a discrete off.

Function 98 is the digit number 8 on the STB.

I went through the entire 255 codes, and many of them acted as a discrete off command, but not one was a discrete on.

Is there any way to modify one of these existing codes (power toggle?) to act as discrete on? Or seeing as I've gone through the entire 255 am I out of luck?

Any other code suggestions to try?

Forget to mention the set top box is made by a company called "Strong" for the Australian market. The model number is 5200, but these codes also work for the 5290.

I think you are probably out of luck. It isn't a matter of changing the codes as much as how the receiver responds when it receives a code.

The IR protocol this STB uses is the most common IR protocol used by, what I would estimate, 60%of the equipment out there. It is 32 bits. The first 8 bits are considered to be device, the second eight bits are sub-device, then next 8 are the command and the last eight are the complement of command (if command is 00000000 then complement is 11111111). If there is no sub-device then the sub-device is the complement of the device code.

But what those device and command codes mean is up to each manufacturer. So how Toshiba uses the commands is totally different than Yamaha.

There simply are no standards. It has been my experience that most manufacturers use consistent numbering schemes throughout their product lines. Virtually every Sony TV worldwide uses Sony's 12 bit protocol device 1 and discrete commands are 46 for On and 47 for off. Most Sony receivers use device 16 and command 46 is On and 47 is off etc.

Oh well. It was a worth a try. At least I have a discrete Off I can use for a work around.
