I'm a discrete code/universal remote newbie, and I have 2 questions. Thanks in advance to anyone woho can help.

1) I'm thinking about getting the Home Theater Master MX-500. Since it can only learn from other remotes (and via codes, of course) I'll need to buy another remote, such as a Pronto, to "learn" the discrete codes, and then the MX-500 can "learn" the discrete code form the Pronto, right?

2) Do the following devides have discrete codes?

Pioneer DV-341 DVD Player
Pioneer VSX-D711 Receiver
Scientific Atlanta Cable Box (unknown model)
Sony CDP-C315 CD Player (fairly old)
Panasonic PV-945H VCR
Philips Magnavox TS3254C101 TV

Thanks again to anyone who can help!

yes

Pioneer VSX-D711 Receiver

Most Pioneer receivers do

Scientific Atlanta Cable Box (unknown model)

No discretes

Sony CDP-C315 CD Player (fairly old)

Maybe not discretes, but you could use "play" for On, and try the Sony "system off" code for Off

Panasonic PV-945H VCR

Not sure. Very few Panasonic VCR's have discrete codes

Philips Magnavox TS3254C101 TV

Again, not sure. Try the files section on this one.

There is definitely a discrete power command for some Philips Magnavox TV's, I don't know how universal that it is.

Why not consider one of the One-for-All remotes that can be programmed with a PC and can genrate discrete commands. Many are $25-$30 and you can buy or make the cable. Despite the low cost these are very capable remotes and they have a very active user group. Much of this capability has been discovered by users and there is freeware to do the programming with a PC that is very polished.
