Help! I just got a new Oppo DV-981HD DVD player and the manual says it can USE discrete on/off signals but that the remote doesn't send them (and therefore can't "teach" my pair of Home Theater Master MX-500 remotes how to discretely turn the player on and off (and of course I need that to create macros so that my wife can turn on all the right equipment with just one button to watch a DVD like she can for watching cable TV or satellite TV). Can anybody tell me how to teach my MX-500 how to discretely turn off this otherwise fantastic DVD player? I've got a trusty old One For All Cinema 7 that I bought just to teach the MX-500 other remote commands in the past, if that helps.

Thanks in advance for your help!

For the Cinema 7 to have advanced codes for this model it has to have the code preset, which it doesn't. Get yourself upgradeable remote like the urc-8910, have OFA load the OPPO code, and ask for the list advanced codes.

Find a friend who has the remote for the 980. Its remote has the buttons. Or maybe you could buy one from Oppo? Just an idea.

Thanks for the suggestion; I may do just that. Pardon my ignorance, but who is "OFA"? And how do I get the list of advanced codes into the urc-8910 (or is it fairly obvious once I've bought it and read the instructions)?

OFA stands for One-For-All.

To map an advanced code(EFC for short) to key on the 8910 see here.

Thanks for the information and your patience. The previous post also said, "...have OFA load the OPPO code, and ask for the list advanced codes."

How do I get One For All to load the Oppo code and where do I ask for the list of advanced codes?

I emailed Oppo sometime ago for these

they replied

If you have a remote control which can be fed Hex code, the Discrete On/Off commands are:

Power:

Hi!
I find myself in the same quandary as you did, but I do not have any other remotes. Did you find it necessary to use your OFA remote, or did you find another way around this problem? I am a universal remote novice. When I wrote OPPO, they said I could use the Marantz, Philips or Toshiba codes, but none of these worked. What did you finally have to do?
Thanks!
