I'm dying here... I've tried the sony code xls program, I've tried every imaginable ccf around. Just need "on" (I've got an "off" that works) and volume up and volume down. If I send somebody the "off" code can you point me in the right direction please. thanks

Scott,
Just post the code here. That way you have the highest probability of figuring out what the problem really is.
Post the Off code that works and the On code that doesn't.

Its not the codes that are the problem, it's the receiver. The newer Sonys are using a new code set(mode 2), which even their newest remote the VL-1000 doesn't know. To find out more do a Author search in both sony forums, for "immier".

Ok Scott,
Where did you find the Off code?? This is 3 repeats of the Sony15:4:55 the System Off (universal off), 2 repeats of Sony12:16:47 receiver discrete off, 2 repeats of Sony12:1:47 the TV off, and 2 repeats of Sony12:2:47 the VCR off.
I don't claim to be an Sony expert but I have the STR-DE 825 and mine is about 3 years old and responds to the normal Sony receiver discrete on and off. It does come with what I think is a 2-way remote that I know is very hard to learn from.
I would try the Sony receiver discrete On command found in the discrete section again.
Maybe Google/Deja search for the STR-DE685 and see if it is something different. Other than the very latest equipment, Sony is very predictable in it's use of IR commands with the exception of certain sound field commands.

Hi Jon,
I got the code from a ccf file in the Sony Receiver section. Do you think there is anything to the "double hit" of the codes? I'll give it a try just for the heck of it. Just as an FYI, the STR-DE685 is being moved out at Fry's for $249 and comes with the RM-PP4411 remote. Thanks for all of the help. I'll keep you posted.
Scott

I found the problem with the help from the Sony Support Forum all that I had to do was reset the receiver to AV1. The discrete codes worked after that. Thanks for all the help.
