Nobody else needs discrete on and discrete off codes for the Xbox? Or, does it not support on/off?

I was under the impression that all Sony discrete codes were the same. 113 - on, 109 - off. Those are the discrete codes for my TV, VCR, and DVD player
(DVP-NS300). I have seen somewhere that not all Sony products support discrete codes, so if those codes don't work, they probably aren't supported.

There is not a way, discrete or otherwise, to turn the XBox on or off via remote...

Thanks for the replies. Even though the end result is that there are no codes that will work, I'd still rather see it confirmed than to continue wasting my time looking, so thanks for confirming these issues.

Xbox sells a remote, which includes an IR receiver that plugs into one of the controller plugs. I have toyed with buying the remote package to get the device, teaching the commands to my remote from the Xbox remote. Has anbody done this?

Yes, I have the Xbox remote/IR-receiver (aka: DVD playback kit) and taught the commands to my MX-500 remote, but the Xbox remote doesnt have an on/off button.

If you're serious about it, you can treat it like any other a/v device that has a "hard" power switch.
Leave the power switch in the "on" position all the time and switch the AC to the unit.
If you have an a/v receiver or processor with discrete codes and a switched outlet on the back, you're set. If you do not, you can use the Xantech IR addressable AC outlet, I believe that this is an AC-2. These can be triggered w/ RC-68 codes, which are posted everywhere. This isn't a cheap fix, ($300 - 350) but it's dead reliable. I usually only use these when a customer has a vintage or audiophile piece that he can't bear to replace with a new control friendly piece. You can prob get Xantech stuff from any of the banner advertisers on this site. But for not much more than this, you can just buy the new a/v receiver that does a lot more than turn on your video game!
