VCR/DVD combo with discrete ON/OFF?

I got my kids a Sony SLV-D300P VCR/DVD combo for X-mas, and wanted to use discrete ON/OFF to make operation easier. No such luck with this unit, apparently. There is a convoluted workaround (InputDVD-Power-InputDVD-Eject-Power-Power-Input), but there has to be something out there that is not a total TOAD.

Can anyone recommend a VCR/DVD combo that supports discrete codes for at least ON/OFF?

Pre-programmed a remote for Samsung, Toshiba, Panasonic, Sony, JVC and Zenith DVD/VCR combos, went to a few stores and tried it out. Did not try Philips, Deawoo, Apex, or other off-brand units.

What I found was that only Panasonic supports a discrete ON, but not a discrete OFF. Toshiba units can be switched on via Eject (in either VCR or DVD mode). The other brands either accepted Power toggle only, or perhaps an Eject when in DVD mode (but not VCR).

Are you using a surround system with the combo unit or is it a standalone piece? I know it's not fancy but you could just plug the combo unit into the receiver and use its discrete on/off (if it has one).

Or with the piece that had a discrete on, you could assign the macro with a on code then the pwr toggle to turn it off. Good luck.

Right, the discrete ON is enough for any remote that has good macro capabilities. I'd switch my Sony for the Panasonic if the reviews on the Panasonics were a bit more positive. And apparently they are quite noisy (big no-no).

Wouldn't the power toggle also turn it on if it was off to begin with? I'm fairly new to this all, but it seems like discrete off is far more useful than discrete on. On macros are easy, but a good system off macro seems impossible without a discrete off. Am I confused?

Basically if you have either a Power On or Off you can create a reliable Macro for the other. Some don't like turning their TV On first before Off.

Power On Only

Off=Power On| Power Toggle

Power Off Only

On= Power Off |Power toggle

I know this is a reply to an old thread but I just checked our library & we have discrete power for Sony combos. You still want?

Try these:

Power Off
0000 0067 0000 000d 0060 0018 0030 0018 0030 0018 0030 0018 0030 0018 0018 0018 0030 0018 0018 0018 0030 0018 0030 0018 0018 0018 0030 0018 0018 03d4

Power On
