I am using a 42LE5400 LED LCD and they changed the code set from the rest of LG models.  I am able to turn it on using ka 1 01 but the off command ka 1 00 does not work.  I have tried calling LG but their Resi tech support is useless when it comes to RS232 and the commercial tech is unfamiliar with this set.

Has anyone gotten this set to work with RS232?

probably should be posted in the RS232 forum, but you can try this.

mc 01 c4 = on
mc 01 c5 = off

they also recommend that you use two chars for the ID these days.

Well at first I thought you were going to be out of luck because according to the LG site, that TV has a RS-232 connector, but it is listed for "Service Only". On other LG TVs that are controllable via the RS-232 connector, it always lists "Control & Service".

However, looking at the manual, it does list a set of control commands that you can access via RS-232. Look at page 184-189 of the manual for the commands you want.

Here is a link to the manual.

From LG:

Even though some models do not require the ID or DATA to have a zero fill, in order to make it uniform on all models please include it. Example: ka 1 1(CR) Use: "ka 01 01" instead of: "ka 1 1"

I have used the codes in the manual and discussed it with the LG pro tech support guys. The only code from the manual that works is the power on command. I tried all the other codes, using the single or the double character for ID, and still the only one that works is the power on. It is really annoying that they do not give any string examples in the spec. Here are the codes I have tried, the \r is the carriage return in RTI:

ka 1 01\r is power on and works and ka 01 01\r works as well
ka 1 00\r and ka 01 00\r does not work for power off
xb 1 93\r is supposed to be HDMI 4, no good
kf 1 32\r is supposed to be volume to 50%, no response

I was also confused that LG peppers the RS232 spec with recomendations to use Hex, like on the top of the table on page 186, but the code seems to be ASCII based. This also confused the LG PRO Tech Support guy I spoke to.

any thoughts?

PS
I have two of these TVs and I get the same response, or lack there of, on both

I'm no 232 guru, or even a novice, but I'd remove RTI from the mix and try a terminal emulation from the laptop.

I had a 55" LED, I beleive a 55LE8500 to control and had no issues controlling it. It respoded to the ka 01 00\r and ka 01 01\r commands. I only needed to control 1 HDMI port, so either kb or xb commands will work. It wored with the xb 01 90\r command.

I also send commands with leading 0 though it often doesn't matter since I do not recall seeing an echo with the leading 0.

Point, is that the commands seem to be working. I'd follow the advice above and test using terminal emulator and your computer.

LG has a program you can use to send commands out of your computer. You may want to download and try using it, if using a terminal emulator is too much trouble.

I'm also trying to control an 55LE8500 either via discrete IR codes or RS232. I've got an RS232 cable connected, and when I enter commands like ka 01 00, the commands are echoed back, but the TV doesn't turn on or off. I'm wondering, what is the correct response I am suppose to receive? Just the echo?

Has anyone else tried to get a 2010 LG TV to work via RS232. The TV says service only, so I am doubting that RS232 control works, but a previous posting in this thread indicates otherwise.

To add to my previous posting, my 55LE8500 does echo back rs232 commands. It just doesn't respond with the proper "ok" message. In other words, if I send:

ka 01 01\r

it echos back

ka 01 01\r

What system are you using to send the RS-232?

I'm using a network serial port - attached to a linux system, communicating either via "telnet" or my own Java software. It seems to be configured correctly as the LG TV is echoing back the characters.

I finally got the official word from my LG distributor that this set does not have the RS232 enabled right now. LG will be issuing a firmware update that will remedy this problem but for the short term you are out of luck. Exactly which models this affects I do not know but double check with your distributor before ordering a LG set, they should be able to check with their rep to let you know.

This sucks if you already burned hours trying to get this TV to work.

Thanks. I appreciate it. Do you know where you find news of firmware updates?
