Being wickedly slow and wanted to add to my rack portfolio, next to the fact that this cabinet was the definition of "plumbers have leaky pipes and electricians have faulty lights" i wanted to something about it.

I used snaps new cabinet racks (which BTW: are really nice and really a quality rack) There are two sides to this, the right side is for the den media room and the left side is reserved for an outdoor 3 season multi purpose room.

Ill be adding the components for the 3 season room in the spring. I am also doing a RTI system for both rooms. I wanted to show the importance of using a rack, unfortunately my pics dont do this justice on just how bad things were and how it turned out. Also the Iphone 4s camera sucks some major you know what so the pics are atrocious. The back of the rack is really not as bad as it looks, when i pull it back out to install the RTI system in a couple weeks ill get some better pics.

Please feel free to use these awful pics in your portfolio. Maybe someone here could clean them up a bit?

Im also open to suggestions if you guys see anything. Cooling is done using cool components toekick fan. also, the second tivo is for outside and were using it as a second DVR hence the electrical tape covering the IR receiver :p total time not including lunch or dinner....9 hours flat from start to clean up

Enjoy!

Nice job! Looks good!

The only thing I would have done differently would be to remove the rack mounted power strip in lieu of a 1U vent space to give the Denon some breathing room. The surge could have been located in cabinet two or you could have used a strip mounted on the back wall.

thanks, well i played and played with the rack design. The stupid PS3 isnt the slim and that takes up a 3u (i used a two u shelf and used the vented airspace to house the dome, if that makes sense)

I was a bit worried about the rack mounted power strip but its not that deep and leaves tons of room for air in the back. if it becomes a problem ill have to cave and get a slim PS3.

My cabinet is 22" deep, the rack is 20 1/4 and with the knobs its really close to the doors. height wise is only 1/4 inch from the top of the rack and the opening of the cabinet, there wasnt any room for a wall mounted strip sense another rack is going in.

that being said, i think we'll be upgrading to a slim :( we'll see what happens.

Rack is nice but the carpet ROCKS!

I know budget is always a concern but Middle Atlantics rack would have given you an extra U or two with their CFR. Just spec'd a similar project an was amazed that Snap over looked that concept.

Anyways this might get added to my do this not that portfolio!
Good work.

Maybe it's not evident in the pics but what's the point of a rack like that with no slide out mechanism? The reason I ask is you have a pic of the rack all loaded up and with all of the cabling but I don't see a slider. Do you muscle that thing in and out each time?

Those racks are pretty light even loaded. Middle atlantic has slides that fit to the cabinet. These racks are less than half the price of a Srsr rack.

The snap racks come with sliders for the bottom, very easy to just slide them out of the cabinet.

I know that is one happy customer....That should be the "poster-child" of why a customer should pay for a rack.

Yes I'm aware of that (well at least that it's an option)...but it doesn't seem like you guys are making use of them because I don't see the cover panel on the bottom, just the bottom of the rack cage.

They are not designed to attach to the cabinet. They simply slide in and out. I know M/A offers "frictionless" or "low-friction" sliders to make it easy. You would just want to be careful on fancy furniture and slide it on to a moving pad or something to protect hard floors. You could pretty easily build a platform 1/8" taller than the cabinet base to aid in sliding it out.

The point is to create as much rack space as possible in the cabinet. The mechanism on the SRSR uses up at least 1U...maybe 2? I think they make these as short as 22" total height?

I agree that every job should have a rack. Even something like these cabinet racks can save time and money on every job. Pre-racking the gear, configuring it, firmware updates, etc at the shop. Shorter interconnects, easier to hide the mess of wires, easier maintenance/service/upgrades, etc......

Great work. Both of you. If I had a cabinet to put one of those in, I would have one. I think the M/A CFR racks do give you more Us per total height though. If you need it. :)

yeah, unfortunately we have to. The rack BARELY fits in there. the rack is 20 1/4 deep and the interior depth is only 22" also with the face frame of the cabinet literly only have 1/4" to spare sliding it in. Im so tight on space as it is i couldnt sacrifice 2U worth of space for the slider. Had this been for a customer i would have forced a PS3 slim. I cant even use the little slick plastic sliders otherwise it wouldnt fit in there.

The middle atlantic rack is too tall by literally 3/16" i was astatic when snap came out with the cabinet rack that actually fit

Nah man, the rack with 3 shelfs and 1 power supply unloaded is around 78lbs subtracting 10lbs for packing material. loaded with cables, zipties and equipment it is easilly around 200lbs. This isnt like snaps other racks and is really well built and they used heavy guage steal. It takes two people to get it in without messing up the cabinet :(

The customer is me :) please feel free anyone to use these pics for your self in trying to sell a rack if a customer balks at the price.
