As we all know, PS3 uses Bluetooth for remote communication and there is no IR receiver. The upcoming remote will also be Bluetooth, so there does not appear to be an IR learn option here. Until someone makes an IR remote for this (with an IR USB receiver), there is a short term solution. This is for BLURAY DVD playing only.

1.Purchase a PS2 to USB adabter from radioshack (part # 26-729) $11.00. This dongle was originally designed to connect PS controllers to a PC.

2.Purchase a SONY original PS2 DVD remote (model schp-10150)

3.Plug the remotes IR receiver into the radioshack adapter and then plug the USB end of the adapter into any PS3 USB port.

4.If the PS3 is not line of sight, connect an IR blaster to the IR receiver (as you would a normal IR eye on any equipment).

5.Learn the IR codes direct from the PS2 remote for use in custom remote programming. Program custom remote accordingly.

That’s it. Now, this predominantly works when in the BluRay mode. This means that a client still needs to navigate to the blue ray disc and select it with the PS3 controller. However, once the disc is playing, they can have full control from their programmed remote. I said it was primarily for DVD playing, however, the 4 major PS2 buttons (Triangle / Circle / Square / X) do work at all times. Unfortunately, navigation with the 4 way pad outside of the DVD area does not work.

Tested so far:

Triangle / Circle / Square / X = All work @ all times.
L1 / L2 / R1 / R2 = Work in DVD mode only.
Select / Start = Work in DVD mode only
4 way pad = Work in DVD mode only
Enter button in middle of 4 way pad = Does not work at all
All remaining buttons (Approximately 32) = Does not work at all

*DVD mode is when the DVD is in, and the client has already selected it with the PS3 controller.

As you can buy the adapter for $11 at radioshack and a used Ps2 remote for $4.99 at GameStop, the investment is minor. While the functionality is limited, customers will appreciate not having to hold a controller and a remote while watching a movie. The reality is, suggesting a BR player is a better solution. However, the PS3 is somewhat doable, so its worthy of a post (and customers will ask for this !).

Why do manufacturers insist on making equipment with remote control limitations that mean they can't be integrated into really expensive systems?

The original meaning of idiot was someone who lived in a world of his own, so did not relate to the world around. (That's why there's an "id" in the word, although Freud's translators adopted that word and changed how we use it.)

Such designers and manufactureres are idiots. They cause their customers to have to spend more money to use their products in elaborate systems or to limit them to simple systems. They are building a block between their products and their customers because they don't look around and see how people do things. Idiots.

A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Boy, I can't believe that Sony would come up with a proprietary way of doing something. It's almost like having equipment that will only work with a 2-way remote and nothing else, or a video tape recorder that won't work with anyone else's equipment.

I wonder if someone will come up with a remote control for their bluetooth enabled PDA or phone?

I like that Radio Shack adapter... all the ones up here in Canada (including The Source, which used to be Radio Shack) are huge things.

(By the way, I downloaded the manual to see what it looks like since they don't have a photo...)

You rock man! I have that very remote and adapter sitting here from my PS2. I've been hesitating to get a PS3 (waiting for a specific game), but this makes it a must buy.

roxboxxx,
Thanks for the info..Nice kludge. I give it a try. Something to also keep in mind that the PS3 will auto load with the game or DVD/BR disc that is in the try if there is no input from the controller within 45 sec on boot up.(estimated have not actually timed it)
I'll let you know tomorrow..

I thought the PS2 codes were Sony DVD codes? This could save on the remote costs!

Hey, I just noticed in the MX database there is a prepro for the PS2. I assume this will work and all I need is the RS Dongle?

I need some HELP, please, from anyone who has gotten the PS2 remote to work on the PS3. I have all the required equipment to do the work-around IR remote for the PS3. Unfortunately, its not working. I plug the IR receiver into the Radioshack adapter and then plug the USB into the PS3. The PS2 remote has no functionality when playing a DVD/BR or when in the PS3 menu. I've looked around in the PS3 menu for a USB option or controller option, but there isn't anything that I can find. I've checked the PS2 remote and IR receiver functionality in my old PS2 and it works fine (and my computer recognizes the Radioshack adapter when plugged in), so it's not the equipment. Am I missing a setting? Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You *do* know that 3/4 of the buttons on the original PS2 DVD remote won't do anything? Just the basic "controller" buttons work.

Also, are you running with the Sony original IR receiver & PS2 DVD remote, or third party?

Yes, I'm aware of the limited functionality of the remote (only certain buttons work). I've read the RC article and this post that explains the button limitations. I'm using an original PS2 remote and IR receiver and a Radioshack PS2 to PC USB adapter. I can't quite figure out my problem. Sounds like others have gotten it to work. :(

One other tidbit. When I hook up my old PS2 wired controller, I have full functionality in the PS3 menus.

Is it possible some PS2 IR Receivers are different than others and impact the functionality in the PS3? I know there are different "Model#" PS2 Remote Controls that look the same (example SCPH-10174 verses SCPH-10171/97042 verses the SCPH-10150 listed at the top of this tread). All have IR Receivers. I'm at a loss.

I did this a couple of weeks ago. AWFUL! I had to learn every button. The PS3 is a POS. You might as well use the game controller for everthing and the USB thing looks bad. Do yourself a favor and buy a real DVD player instead of trying to use a child's video game console for one. I was almost did not bill the client it worked so poorly. He seemed happy so I did anyway. Sorry to be so harsh but this thing really is a toy not a DVD player.

Thanks CCD. I agree. I'm waiting for some next gen BR players to come out before I make the jump. Programming my Pronto Pro 7000 for one of those will be a piece of cake compared to this hassle. I like the PS3, but your right.... regardless of how Sony markets it, it's a gaming console. Still... my type A personality wants to solve this problem because I know it is suppose to work. I hate that! :)
