I am currently working full time as a software engineer and working part time on the side as an AMX Independent Programmer based out of St. Louis, MO. I have a computer science and computer engineering background with a passion for the AV industry. I am also CEDIA Installer I, InfoComm CTS, and AMX ACE certified. I am looking to take on more AMX jobs for dealers in and around the St. Louis Metro Area.

I have a question for the other independents out there. Do you do much advertising or how have you been able to generate business? Do you have any suggestions for someone fairly new to the industry to help get my name out there? Thanks!

Build a stellar portfolio of examples of your work...

Befriend the AMX reps at the trainings around the country and let them know that you want to pick up programming gigs...

Chat with the people around you at the trainings to see where they are from and who they may know...

Talk to the rep about giving you some referrrals...

AMX corpoorate will take on some programming, but they are SKY high... The local branches have their own hired guns to help you out, but they are usually booked out to who knows when...

Excellent advice. The programmer we use, we found through our rep many years ago. Don't bother advertising since as an AMX programmer you are pretty specialized and it would be pretty hard to target your clients and if your leads are coming from a rep, hopefully they are someone you would want to work with.
