I agree. Well put, and my sentiments exactly.

Isn't that what is happening with EDTV especially these
days?

Customer: "Is it HD?"

Salesperson: "No..... well yes...... well not exactly.....
well, it's way better than regular digital, sir/ma'am!
It's ENHANCED! And look at the price!"

HTIB's, MP3 players, and EDTV's do have their place, but
they get marketed like they are just as good as many products
that very often don't cost a whole lot more from a proper
shop.

I did read somewhere that a good percentage of customers think the are watching HDTV broadcasting just because the purchased an HDTV set. They are unaware of the need for a HD cable, sat. box etc...

I did have to explain to a customer once that just because his favorite show says "CBS HD" or whatever that he is in fact watching SD on his Sony 4:3 CRT. He was like, "my TV already recieves HD broadcasts... says so on the screen"

Seriously... I wish I could find the article. It was estimated a rediculous number of HDTV owners have no idea they are not watching actual HD

The customer walks over to
their ultra funky Plasma section (showing Nascar racing)

Actually the displays are typically showing a nice blue screen, or in the case of my local Wally World, they have a nice Greenish screen with "DVD" in the middle of the screen. Just waiting for the one person who knows how to hit play on the centralized DVD player to push that da*n button.....

and the rotted - toothed guy in the vest says..."1080i
??? isn't that like a new Tax form or is that a 1040?"...

Nope. The usual response? UHHHH.....UHHHH....UHHHH...

The problem I have with that article is how it talks about the different cables. It states, "If you're using S-video or component cables, which send analog signals, then the HDTV digital image is forced to go through more conversions, possibly degrading the picture." This impies that S-video will display HD, which is incorrect. Actually, I would prefer component video over HDMI.

Thats the part that bothers you? Not the fact there are an estimated FOUR MILLION households who think they are getting HDTV programming when the are not?

"The retailers are trying, but the hard part is that you have to explain to people that spending $2,500 on the set is just the beginning and now you're going to probably have to spend more money every month," Forrester analyst Josh Bernoff said.

Yeah... thats the hard part... I just hate when I have to look a customer in the eye and tell them the bad news.
