For the first time I finally saw an HD VCR in action. I've heard a little and haven't done any research because it just seemed a little ass backwards but I was impressed. Looked as good as any 1080i or 720p I've seen.
Just wanted to hear what others have to say about the sets and the technology. Availability of tapes and its abilities to record anything. It's my limited understanding you can only record via fire wire and the tapes are about 25 bucks (pre-recorded).
Thanks,

I haven't seen tapes that were that low in price (guess I'm looking in the wrong place). I love the immage that D-Theater produces, very film like. DVD's just look absolete after seeing them. The recording standard is fire wire so you have to have a device that outputs that to record, although there is a company that is converting the rgb output of the first generation RCA HDTV satelite receivers and outputing fire wire. I'm waiting for it to catch on before its in my living room.

The price I quoted for the tapes was 2nd hand info so I don't know for sure.
What is the average?

Why would anybody want to spend that much money on cassettes? Cassettes are so inferior, and so easily damaged that you would think the industry would get away from them...especially when it has to do with HD

Cassettes are inferior untill you see this one in action. The average price that I came accross is $35. Everything that I have read hints that HDDVD is still at least 5 years away so if you want HD movies now it's D-Theater.

I use the JVC HM-DH30000U in most of our installations. It's great, and D-Theater movies are outstanding. You can find them at:http://www.lasersedge.com
The tapes run from $28 to $37. They make a compelling demo, and allow your clients to show off great HD to all thier friends.

I saw one a few months ago during Mitusbishi training, It looked sweet!!

The up side is that since the HD tuner is in the TV, the VCR itself is just a storage medium (meaning that it doesnt have to have it's own HD tuner built in) that will help keep the price down. (if you consider $1000 affordable) and yes you can record local HD to it. (it's also a nice fully functional S-VHS unit all in one)

The rep showed us Toy Story 2 from VHS, Prog. scan DVD and D-VHS all at the same time, it was truly breath takeing, and the other 2 are really no comparison.

The downside is yes it's still tape. nuff said.

I am new kid in town, and I was wondering if anyone knows any other manufacturer that makes Digital VCR besides JVC with HM-DH30000U $ 800.00 and a second model with an even higher price tag $ 1000.00. Do you sincerely beleive this new type of digital recorders will catch on to the market at that price? Has anyone compared a DVD recorder to A Digital VCR in terms of Video quality and color rendition? Any input will be welcomed, and I hope I didn't open a can of worms !!

T, The comparison is between 480p(DVD) and 720p or 1080i(HD)

I had the use of a Philips 985 DVD recorder last summer for 2 weeks. The unit worked fine but the image quality was not quite as good as pre-rec DVDs.

I have seen the JVC Digital VCRs in both pre-rec playback as well as off the air HD recordings. The image quality was as good HD as I have ever seen. I have heard of picture problems with tape dropout.

Thanks Phil, I kind figure the Video quality would be better on the DVR if only the Digital Video Cassette's price will drop in price. I guess it's like anything else, the first units are always expensive until people start buying them. We just have to wait and see what the future brings. Thanks again!

OK then.. I'm sold!

Problem I'm having now is actually getting my hands on a HM-DH30000U.

Any JVC dealers willing to sell just this model to us or our clients? We don't have a JVC dealer in our area, so I don't think I'd be stepping on any toes.

Failing that, anyone know of a good distributer that might have them in stock?

Thanks,

Barry
