Is there software to do this? My Dell has an IR emitter right in the back that happens to be 6" away from my Xantech VICR IR reciever. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Steve

I'm not a Pro/Custom installer but I do have a dell laptop. I think that the IR port on a PC is not an IR port. It is in fact an IRDA port.

They have different frequencies or something.

I don't think it will work. You can probably buy a device to plug onto a serial port that will send IR commands. Someone else may have experience of these devices.

Just trying to help, besides who reads a thread with no replies anyway, so at least other people will now read your question.

Thanks Dave! I'm not a custom installer either this just seemed like the most appropriate forum.

You may be right about a difference between IR and IRDA since the research I've done so far comes up with a lot of remote software that uses an emitter device hooked up to a serial port.

Let's see if we get any more feedback - maybe some of the pro/custom installers...

even if you could get it to work, you would have the same problems as the PDA people. IRDA is built to be fast and weak. So you would need to be very close to your equipment for it to work.
