I think Def Techs are good speakers. I carried them for several years before going to Paradigm. At the time, Def Tech did not offer any book shelf speakers and also had a limited selection of subs. Things are different now.

One caution, Def Techs distribuion is not quite as tight as B&W and Paradigm. Also, in the latest Inside Track Newsletter dealer survey (December 31st.), Def Tech slipped from third to fifth in the category of "Specialist Oriented Business Programs". Paradigm was ranked number one with B&W coming in number two in this area. Phase Tech was ranked number three.

I just installed a 5.1 set-up for a client the other day and I thought they sounded pretty nice. They seem like they are built nice and solid too. I liked them.

As a prejudiced (happily so) owner of a Def Tech setup*, I have only good things to say about them. The fact that they're bi-polar is a plus, as they have the advantages of both direct-radiator and di-polar designs.

I believe my system could be used an an auditorium-sized room with no problem. They play loud and clean. I have a friend who is a recording-studio tech, and he's impressed.

I use a Sunfire Stereo amp (325W x 2) to power the mains, and a Sunfire Cinema Grand (200W x 5) for the rest. I can play the system at realistic levels with plenty of reserve. Eagles - Hell Freezes Over sounds like a live concert.

*BP-2000 mains (originals, not the TL series)
CLR-2000 center (same mids & tweeter)
BP-X surrounds (used as sides)
BP-20 rears (same as BP-2000 exc. no subs)

While I enjoy the sound of them, I think they are over-rated, and over expensive.

Probably could have a better sound for less money. Check into Monitor Audio.

Matt's not wrong, but then, I paid around half price, so I can't complain. They were traded in on a Magnepan system.

I think every speaker has qualities that make it stand out. In my experience...

1) Good speaker for very large rooms or rooms that lean towards the dry side (fabric walls, carpeting, wall hangings, lots of furniture.) Wet rooms tend to reinforce secondary audio waves from traditional speakers, widen the image, make the image less precise and can cause serious phasing problems with di/bi-poles. Dry rooms tend to be easier to control, but overdone, just sound really bad for music. Bi/di-poles can often help correct this problem.

2) Need less power to get same SPL.

3) Difficult to integrate visually into modern or high end NYC decor. Just not a very apartment friendly speaker. No wood veneer finishes, too monolithic looking, but look great in other instances.

4) Relatively cheap for the bing bang high dynamic theater, but maybe other speakers are better at reproducing acoustic instruments, especially at lower or normal volumes.

5) Great company, great support.

btw... I do really love Monitor Audio. Someone wants a high end dual purpose (film and music) theater, I would strongly consider Monitor. Someone wants to have a high powered, mainly film, theater then go with DefTech.
