Here in NYC, garbage collection is twice a week (3 times a week in Manhattan).

Bulk pick up is once a week. My Toshiba 55" RPTV of 13 years finally expired. I put it out on the curb tonight (Tuesday) at 9:45pm for pickup on Wednesday. No more than 20 minutes later I noticed someone had taken the 250 lb. TV.

We don't need no stinkin' sanitation department!

Sorry, I have no credible subjects to ponder tonight.

Did you put a FREE sign on it?

If it's on my curb. I don't want it.

It seems to be a national past time here in NYC for this kind of behavior. They also took two nasty chairs a neighbor across the street put out as well.

In NYC, you don't need a sign!

Much like many 'Ports of call' I have visited in the Carribean ;-)

If your hand isn't on it when it's in 'public' it's free game!

I wonder how long a BOSE system would have sat there!?

OOPS ......see below for the witty retort.
I guarantee I'll tell you the truth and I guarantee I'll tell you what you need to know but I can't guarantee that I'll be telling you anything you want to hear.

I'll bet your neighbor was pissed off when he returned to sit in his chairs and watch your TV.

Now that would be a case of "Trash to dust"......

After 10 years or so, it would disolve.....

Or, you'd come back the next day and find five systems.

Even in a suburban setting stuff tends to disappear... old carpet (& underpad!), broken lawnmowers, old televisions and so forth. We sort of figured out whose been doing it lately and just offer it first. :-)

My step father put a couch out once with a "free" sign on it and it sat there for two days so he changed the sign to "$10" and it was gone the next morning.

In Manhattan, and I'm sure other cities too, there are guys called "pickers" that drive around the city in trucks on bulk pick-up nights grabbing anything they think they can sell at the flea markets that spring up on the weekends . If you've ever seen the junk that many of the vendors sell, now you know where it comes from .

My own personal experience with this kind of thing....

1. Lived in Fort Lauderdale area. Had some nice 8' palm trees, in pots, in the front yard. While planting them I took a short break for a cold drink, and had to run out and stop some guy that was loading some plants in his truck. His stated "I thought they were being thrown out as trash". Yeah, right. That's why half of them are planted in the ground....

I like Fred's response to the Bose thing...People would think "this must be the place I drop this crap off".....lol

bose depository. that's funny.

My last job tonight put my van and open trailer with 2 50" pio plasmas and a subwoofer on the curb. After reading this thread last night I was a little paranoid. Man, I kept running back & forth (wiping my feet, of course). Finally the nice homeowner dude offered to open the garage. So I disconnected and stuffed the trailer in the garage for an hour or so and got the peace of brain I needed.

I gotta get me an enclosed trailer.
