I am still waiting for the response as to how one ties in speaker, control and video wires on racks built off site. I suspect the response will be spade lugs and barier strips but this has been one of sumbling blocks from not doing this on site.

Often AXS racks are at the cabinet maker so building them off site is difficult but not impossible. It is something I have often wished to do but never found the management time to implement. On the other hand, no rack ever has wire ties in it. Velcro only, especially since I am programming, often when the guys are home, and when something does not work I hate having to cut the wire ties to read the labels on the cables. There is also only so much room in my computer bag and for some reason, wire ties are never there. See, I have no problem admitting that I am dumb and do things the wrong way. I often do burn in amps before bring them on site which is why my small lab often has the temperature of a saunna. I do think the comment about building a rack on site is unprofessional because it causes a mess is foolish. I think it can have the opposite effect as the client can see the effort and care you take in constructing the rack. It's only unprofessional if you leave the job site without cleaning up the mess.

We do a MA swinging gate rack (SGR-20-12 or something like that), the UCP modular panels, and Neutrik or banana jacks for speaker lines. Control/Crestron is terminated with one of Crestron's zippy connecting blocks. Coax video is terminated in a UCP panel with RCAs. When the rack arrives it has a loom to tie to the SGR. Works well. We're finishing one right now for the pricipal of a company that is oft-discussed around here; a very smart guy, EE, patent holder, etc. A man of few words, but he did grace us with a "Nice job wiring, there."

Why do your cabinet guys need the rack?

Saunas are good for the soul and spirit, and are a great place to read the paper. Not so good for work....

We do both depending on how big the rack is. If the rack has a lot of gear in it we build it at the shop and then deliver it to the site. If it is a small rack and building it at the shop doesn't really save any time then we do it on site. I personally like to build them on site because I'm silly that way.

Excellent.
I know what you mean in the cons' list... Did a job recently, had every trade guy coming by every 1/2 hour or so... Hey! WOW! LOTS OF WIRES!!! HOW DO YOU KNOW WHERE THEY ALL GO???
Or... you get the meth-head looking guy asking "Gee, How much is that all worth"???

I'd vote for in the shop from now on!

It's nice to know somebody out there thinks like me.

I've been called arrogant, but they are wrong; I actually do know it all. I take "Mr. Know It All" as a compliment. Thank you to all who've acknowledged my intellectual superiority without animosity.
