I am currently wiring a retro 7.1 setup for a client who bought a Yamaha HTR-5960BL receiver before he hired me. I don't have any experience with this receiver, and was wondering if anyone who does knows if it has good discretes, because he has his heart set on keeping it. Thanks.

it should. try the ir codes for the rxv557. should be the same. urc has a great set in their database. if using rti, use the rxv2400 set. most codes will/should work

Great 7.1 receiver. It's got discretes for everything including every surround mode.

The only problem you will discover is that the surround modes may not match in about 1/2 the codes. Seems they change these around on a regular basis. My only real gripe.

The only thing I noticed with this receiver after doing some research is that it does not have hdmi inputs. Yamaha makes a higher end model, the htr-5990 I believe, that does have hdmi inputs. Oh well.

The HDMI connections are overrated. You will find plenty of threads lamenting the downsides of this wiggy connector.
