best for DLP picture quality....grey.......white......tab tension......any non-ripple, non tab tention and great picture?
I always go back to Stewart, but the $$$$$ sometimes is too much for some clients

I have not been able to see a side by side comparison for the tab tensioned and non tensioned. Do most of you spec tension mounted screens? Is the difference worth the extra money?

ceied,
ya, what's with the grey?...... hear so much about the right grey material being better, and have done both, but I got to say the white seems more life to it.....even if it's a Stewart.....should probably go with my knowledge and experience instead of the propaganda from manufacturers
Self doubt sucks sometimes

I'm one who believes in grey screens in the right rooms or with the right proj. It depends on light output, contrast ratio and room's light control. With todays digital proj's it is sometimes best to go with a grey. Just one man's opinion.

Screen Research with black backing for acoustically transparent applications.
Screen Innovations for fixed & motorized.
Tab tensioned was critical in CRT front projectors for convergence. This is not as cricitical with micro display technology today.
Gray screens are a bandaid solution to bad contrast ratio projectors. Most new projectors have contrast ratios above 1500:1 so grey screens are no longer needed. Gray screens shift the color temperature and cause the whites to be crushed in their intensity.
The screens you really shoud be keeping an eye on are the Visage series by Screen Innovations. Watch the video still visible after hitting it with a 500 watt work lamp. They are a 2 gain screen and really look good in a light controlled room or a room with high ambient light. They even can be visible outdoors. The screens are only available in a fixed version but the motorized versions are coming in August before CEDIA.
The Visage screen is also semi kid proof and the surface can be cleaned easily.

Why did you give up? I've been using some Da-lite, have seen some wrinkling on the tensioned models and just had a motor die. We've seen a lot of steaking in the screens, and wrinkles are just as common on their motorized screens as their logo. I did a 5000 lumens job on a 133" screen and they had to send me 5 screens before I got one I could say was good. To be fair to them, they replace every screen you are not happy with, no questions asked. The company is easy to work with and the price is good. We have only eliminated them from our upper end resi sales. Budget and commercial stuff still gets Da-lite

Interesting - we've used Da-lite exclusively for over 5 years, mostly fixed though. Never a single issue other than the non-perfed screen they sent last week and it was supposed to be perfed. We were wondering why the speakers sounded so dead!

Draper or Vutec.
Vutec has a really nice alternative to tab tension called Vu Flex Pro that is very rigid when fully extended ( no wrinkles) but it doesn't have extra flaired material and wires of a tab tension system. It's only available in a 1.3 gain, but in many situations that's fine.
