I have a hospital I am about to do a consultation for and they are going to be incorperating a nurse call in all the rooms (96 total) and want to make sure the TV"s have the proper interface for something, possibly for channel up/down and volume up/down. Im assuming that they are referring to rs232??? Does anyone have experience with this sort of environment? If so is there anything out of the ordinary you have to comply with outside of the normal? Thanks

I put 4 Samsung EDTV plasmas in the proctology dept.at our local hospital a a couple of years ago. They were exactly the same as the "medical grade" Canon Digital Imaging one's the "medical" guy was selling for 10k each. When I say exactly I mean exactly, all they did was change the logo from Samsung to Canon. The medical salesman ok'ed it and eventually bought a couple from me for another job.
I was there when they tested them on a LIVE patient. Gross 42" colon! BTW 1 year later burn in city! Too bad there were no 42" LCDs out then.
Different app but they were in a hospital.

What would make a component "medical grade"?

I would think:

hi contrast, resistant to burn in, great grey scale tracking, have the ability to be fully calibrated which all medical sets should be at least quarterly.

Nope mine were Pewter and Black. Never seen a white plasma but Samsung has a white looking LCD in some of their ads and on their site. [Link: samsung.com]

OEX: I think you just described how all TVs should be. ;)

Here is a Sony LMD-1950MD medical grade color monitor. The only inputs I dont recognize are the bottom left (which Im assuming is power) and the input on top of the s-video which at first appears to be s-video but is something else. From what I can tell the only thing additional is the ethernet port/bottom left input/and the s-video look alike??? Thanks and sorry for this image taking up so much space.

It looks like PS2, actually. That's strange.

Sounds like you are talking about the patients' rooms. They need the inputs for hard wired up/down controls that lie on the bed with the patient, as wireless remotes get lost, knocked onto the floor etc. These units usually also have a funky little speaker built-in too, so the TV speaker isn't blaring, and waking up the other patients.
Aside from that you should be able to use a stndard TV, but the wall bracket, and tie-downs need to pass special codes for safety.
I'd contact Panasonic or Sonys' commercial divisions, they should have all the info.
A current trend is towards white cabinets, as the hospital arcihitects (my neighbor is one), say that they tend to steer clear of black components in hospitals because it is a depressing color! Really!
I could ask my neighbor tomorrow if he knows who supplies the switches, and what TV's they have been working with.
Or, you could Google-up hospital T.V.s ...?

They carry the line of Curbell DPS digital pillow speakers.
These also have all of the volume up/down channel up/down controls and nurse call buttons.
All of the tv's get pulled to a central panel they build that everything ties into.
Hope this helps!

Elaborate on the TV's get pulled to a central panel.

Simplex Grinnel is installing the Nurse Call Easy Care system and all Im doing is homerunning coax to the communication room and distributing CATV throughout the building as well as installing the TV's and terminating the wire coming from the headwall where the nursecall handset is. If your referring to something else fill me in because I feel that I may have left something out due to the response I received when I submitted my bid. At first I thought I was high but found out we were less than everyone else.

DIRTE, did you finish your project. I just saw these posts and noticed how everyone is slightly confused. I've been doing systems in hospitals for years. If you want the exact correct answers email me at [email protected].

for exmple, stay away from medical grade monitors. it's just a monitor, not a TV. In a few minutes i cal tell you everything you need to do.
