I dont know if it was ever implemented...West coast here

Oregon and Washington require low voltage licenseing..I have had my oregon Lic. for 8-9 years now..24 hours of continuing education and code change every 3 years..
There's no worse feeling than that millisecond you're sure you are going to die after leaning your chair back a little too far.

I remember Suffolk County in New York had some kind of "appliance repair" license they were having CI's pay for if they inquired. Otherwise, in the tri-states, only Connecticut has a state-wide LV license, AFAIK, unless you are talking about the possible need for a "home improvement contractor's" license.

I'm working towards obtaining the NYS security and alarm installer's license as a way to stave off any worries or uncertainty about future legislative changes. The training has been quite useful, and the exams are more challenging than those offered by CEDIA. The security and alarm training is cheaper, too, with the possible upside of expanded business opportunities.

One of the main reasons for preference of the low-voltage license is that we want to be sure any lighting systems, etc. that we install will be to code and will pass any potential inspection.

Sounds like you need someone with a full electricians license at this point.

Ed: Even for low voltage lighting and Lutron systems? That's what I'm mainly interested in covering.

That's what I'm mainly interested in covering.

If you are installing Lutron dimmers in switch boxes, you will need a licensed electrician. Low-volt folks can spec and design systems, but when it comes to the actual installation of dimmers and switches, an electrician has to do it. At least that is how it is in MA and NH. I believe everywhere else also.

We only work in the NY/NJ/CT metro area, so laws and requirements outside those areas may not apply.

I'd like to keep this thread for people who are in the NY/NJ/CT metro area and looking for work. As I said, only NY (NYC, Westchester, Western LI areas mainly) licensing is required, but any others necessary to work in the tri-state area are preferred. :)

If you have questions, please e-mail me directly, as I may not check this thread as often as e-mail.

Thank you,
Damon DG
