He came in and said i can just run one cat5 and splice in a prefab HDMI.

[Link: engadget.com]

After reading it with him in the shop it was infact a compoent video cable that the hacks spliced in.

Flame away.

Holy crap, thats hilarious:

We used three pairs of the cat-5 for our component cables and left the shielding disconnected. Heat shrink tubing was used to insulate each connection as it was built, and the entire assembly was covered in heat shrink tubing to finish off each cable end. For ease, we finished the other end of the cable after we pulled it through the walls. The final cable performed just as well as our shorter cable, but we suspect a high end cable would provide slightly better video quality.

Just goes to show the DIY guys at AVS and elsewhere really do know more than us. I'm sure that cable trick is being sold by some AVS sponsor over there.

Wow, that site is almost as good as AVS......

One idiot telling another idiot "how to".

That's too funny.

FWIW, I disagree with your assessment of AVS. There's a ton of extremely knowledgable people there both DIY and Pro. Idiots too, just like here and everywhere else.

I agree, just as the local asylum has some very knowledgable people - at least about certain specific subjects.

But when they can't get out of the asylum, they have no other choice but to rack up >5k posts on several "geek" forums, where they become a legend in their own minds and the minds of others they will never actually meet.

"Mommy what is that big yellow ball in the sky?"

"Why Tommy, that's the sun and if you'd step outside more often, you might recognize it."
Chasing Ernie's post count, one useless post at a time.

Q, with 100k+ members, you're bound to find people who actually know what they're talking about and are quite knowledgeable about their subjects. Too bad they get drowned out by the village idiots (at least in the integration forum where I (and you) hang out). Used to be some smart people in the flat panel and projector forums too, but they also get drowned out and its not worth reading 1000 ridiculous posts just to find something by you, or Mark Rubin, or the other Mark, or many others that I would actually want to read.

All in my opinion of course.
