I am interested in becoming a custom install but i dont know where to start.what are the qualifications and is there a school for it or is it pretty much OJT any help would be appriceated

One alternative many pursue is to find a local installer and get on the job training. Work hard, show up on time, learn lots and you can potentially go far.

We have an apprenticeship program available for those that are interested. Some type of electronics, wiring or building knowledge is helpful but not always required. We have 8 locations in NC. I'm in Las Vegas. Hit me up if you need help, a contact or more info.

I went to Lincoln Tech for their EST (Electronics Systems Technician) program. A small portion of the class was about home theatre, but it covered computer networking, tel-co, building materials and construction, home theatre, fire alarm systems, security system and a bunch more. Gets you started on the basics of modern day electronic systems. I chose to go into home theatre after finishing schooling because it seemed the most interesting.

Read every thead here going back about 3 years. Get a job with local outfit. check out infocomm CTS and Cedia. After they take all your money you should be ready to start.

Dont undercut and sell just to get a gig. Dont go into jobs over your head and crash and give the rest of us a bad name.

Try to find what appears to be the highest quality, best run CI outfit in your area... One that has been around for quite a while, and has a good reputation. Let them know you want to work with the best, and be willing to start at the bottom... If you are passionate, and work hard, they'll in time, advance you, train you & send you to occasional trainings. A majority of the process will be OTJ, and there will be times you may think you made a big mistake, but if you have the aptitude for it--- focus on learning the ins and outs of programming the remotes and larger touch-panel systems. You might want to get hip to network wiring, and configurations. A lot of our products will for the most part, be networked... We're already almost there, and in a few years I imagine the majority of home systems will be network based. Always strive to do the neatest and highest quality work you can do & you'll find yourself in demand after a few years!
