Need to install a progressive scan dvd player and was planning to buy a Sony. I noticed it said that it had no Dolby Digital or DTS decoder built in. Is this normal and is it a problem? I looked at a Toshiba and it did have the decoders built in. The dvd will be going into a receiver. Any info will be appreciated.

This is quite normal. Most receivers have the Dolby digital/DTS processor built in to them. If your receiver is old..let's say about 4-5 years old, it may not have a processor built in. These were called digital ready receivers. If yours is the old, check in the back for connections that read: "Front L/R in, Center in, Sub in, Rear L/R in". If if does then you will need the processor in the dvd player like the Toshiba. If your receiver is newer, check to make sure what type of digital inputs it has: Optical (square) or Coaxial (usually orange). Just make sure your DVD player has the similar type of digital out...some brands have both, some do not. Make sure that when you purchase the dvd player, to get cables as needed...If you have a digital ready receiver you'll need 6 audio cables, if it's newer you'll need a digital cable...In my opinion Coaxial is better...
