Reviving an old thread here...I have a prospective client who is bound and determined to use rock speakers in her soon-to-be re-landscaped back yard. I do not like "rock speakers," and, thusly, have neither specified nor installed them. She may force me to break the tradition...

What are current favorites for [primarily] sound quality and durability?

TIA

Take a pair of these:

and then drill holes in and stick a pair of these over them:

;)

I usually use the 8" Proficients because lets face it, rock speakers generally leave a lot to be desired and there is little point in throwing big money on them.

I can't recommend one, but I can advise against. Sonance products impress me nearly always, but the rock speakers sound like my work van's stereo.

To be honest, the Episode 8" rocks don't sound bad. I have a few clients that absolutely love them. Yes a SLS sounds better, but for the money, with decent power feeding them, the rocks sound pretty good.

Do the Episodes. I am a shop on speakers and hate that I love these. No disrespect to anyone but these are so worth the money. Retail that is. Get the 8"s and call it a day.

We install a lot of SpeakerCraft Ruckus 6s and both our clients and us have been pleased. Wish they wouldn't have discontinued the Ruckus 8s though.

I switched from the Ruckus 8's to the Episode 8". They both sound great. I can't say that one is overly better than the other.

The problem for me is that the last Ruckus 8's I touched were a job up in Cape Cod about 2 years ago. I haven't been able to do a side by side comparison. I really liked the Ruckus 8's 2+ years ago, but now use only the Episodes for jobs that call for Rock Speakers. The last job I did with the Episodes were fed by a Episode 12 channel amp feeding 4 rocks and 4 channels left over to feed speakers on the deck. Source is a Nuvo P100. The client absolutely loved it. He had a 4th of July party out there and was thrilled with it. He is Irish and he said it is "the dog's bullocks". I don't know what that means, but it sounds good ;-)
