We just ran across a pretty confounding problem, and of course it is with the one client who has EVER asked about closed captioning.

The cable box has no closed captioning function. The plasma display has no closed captioning function. But with some luck, one of you has solved this and perhaps has some help for me!

The cable company is Adelphia in Southern California, and the box is a Motorola HD unit, Model DCT, with software version 72.46.
In case the Unit ID matters, all but its last three digits are 000-03277-66806-xxx and there is also a listing for MCA, whatever that is: 0-8, 1-8203, 2-16439, 3-35071.

The plasma is a Fujitsu P42HHA40US, made on July 5, 2005.

A counter person at a local vendor tells us that he had the same problem with his cable box and was able to locate a four-digit code to hack...or something.

Any ideas? I'm off to look for the manual online now, because of course the cable installer did not leave one with either of the cable boxes on premise.

Thanks!

A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

What an awesome site, and an awesome crowd of people! Just after posting the above, I noticed another post about a Motorola box...here is my response to that post:

1) Power off the box 2) press
menu button.

Thank you so much for this, and for posting it right now!

A client has no CC because neither their Motorola HD box nor their Fujitsu plasma has normal commands for it, but this command got me to the menu where I could turn on. Details are that I can only enable or disable CC in the digital mode; all settings, and even font size changes, make no difference in the displayed closed captioning.

And the customer has to go to that menu EVERY time they want to turn the CC on or off, which, Motorola folks, is almost terminally dumb.
But HEY THANKS!

Glad to be of service. I was on the phone with comcast tech. dept last year for an hour telling THEM about this menu. We found it on mistake. It took a cable supervisor out at the site before they believed.

Remember - you need 480i override in order to have graphics on HD channels
