I thought you guys might like this. It's an article that explains how to install a new hard drive (internal or external) to the Scientific Atlanta 8300HD to increase capacity.

Thank you,

Has anyone actually done this? Also, is the 300gig limit because of the cable box, or is it because of the limit of HDD size at the time of the article.

Also, are the external drive ports active yet? If so, that's great news!

Thanks,

Fred Forlano

I have a customer who did this, and his only warning was something about the sequence of turn on/turn off. I don't remember exactly, but there was something you could do that would essentially render the outboard HDD useless if you turned them on in the wrong order. We were moving his equipment into a new cabinet, and just let him power it up to avoid any issues. He was very happy with his hack.

DJ,

That's good to hear! I'll have to read more on it for my home system.

Thank you,

Yeah, see this huge thread I started on AVS last year. I was probably the first to ever try the external SATA on the 8300HD. I works great!

I've been meaning to try to expand my 8300HD for a while now (it just doesn't hold nearly enough).

Anyone know about the 300 gig limit?
