I have been reading the forum for 2 days now with no luck. I have a CDP-CX450 and a Pronto remote. What I want to do is to figure out a quick way (other than learning each artist code) to type in the code for each artist in the changer. This way I can click on a button named "artist name" and it will set the changer to artist mode/artist name (that I select).

I have learned 5 different artist codes so far but I can't see a pattern in the data. Can anyone help or point me in the right direction?

I have a CX-455. There are three options to play music

1. Direct disk number input (disk number 1 - 400)
2. Favorite Artist number input (there are 1-8 programmable slots)
3. Artist Mode input (user can select artist from a list and play all CDs under that
artist - But the artist list has to be setup first as well as the CDs)

and I did mine using option 3 by providing a macro for each artist.

For example, if my artist list consists of

Acoustic Alchemy,
Alanis Morrissette,
Bach J.S.
Bjork
Depeche Mode
Erasure
Enya
Susan Cianni
Tears for Fears
Yanni

If the 'Enya' button is clicked,
the macro executed will be:

Artist Mode CX455 --> envoke Artist mode (first artist in list will be displayed)
Up Arrow CX455 --> skip to next artist in the list
Up Arrow CX455 --> skip to next artist in the list
Up Arrow CX455 --> skip to next artist in the list
Up Arrow CX455 --> skip to next artist in the list
Up Arrow CX455 --> skip to next artist in the list
Up Arrow CX455 --> skip to next artist in the list
Select CX455 --> select the current artist in the list
Play CX455 --> play that CD

I just hope you CX-450 has the same controls as the CX-455

I could do it that way, but I would like to select the artist quicker. If I were to play U2 then I would have to wait for ~60 artists before it would play. I am running an RF extender and I have found it to be a little slow some times too. I usually have a 1 sec delay between each code in a macro.

I have tried working the code (on the Pronto) backwards but I still can't get it work.

Maybe it's a problem with the approach.

If you use the factory remote, is there any quicker way to do it than the way suggested by spellbinder?

"Up arrow" seems to take you through the list alphabetically. Will "down arrow" scroll to the end of the alphabet, with repeated "down arrow" commands moving you back toward the beginning of the alphabet? This would make the middle of the alphabet the hardest thing to get to, but only half as hard as U2 is now.

Can you grossly navigate by going to a Favorite Artist via the Favorite Artist number input, then use spellbinder's method to micronavigate to the artist you want?
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Spellbinder's approach is a good way and is about the quickest way to do it on the factory remote.

I tried the remote to see about going backwards but it only lets you go from A to Z.

I have been sucessfull with reading codes when I select an artist. Eo even if it takes me 2 min of scrolling on the remote to find U2, it will just send out the code for U2. That is the goal of what I am trying to do.

I am going to add a few dummy artists to the list and read their codes and see if it bumps the old ones to a new code/position. If not, then I will just read every code, but if it does screw it up, then it's back to the drawing board.

There's a limitation in the CX-455 when I ran into some problems using option no 3 because the artist list could only take a few in the list (maybe less than 30 that would be displayable) -- which got me pissed.

So I improvised, my 8 favorite artist are placed in the favorites and used option 2 (those near the letter Z downwards) and these artists should have more than one disk. For those artist that just had single disks (like greatest hits, I took them out of the list and just accessed the disks them via option 1

I just wished Sony could let us configure the favorite artist limit to exceed eight slots or they could reprogram that interface to allow the artist list to exceed 30 and have it be numbered so that we could just specify the artist number and be done with it.

You skot are doing a heck of a job getting those artist codes so that you could play them directly! I am even wondering on how you get those codes. How do you get them?

I have tried changine the binary numbers from 76 & 77 to 78 but it didn't work. I also tried doing that and changing binary 2633 & 2632 to 2631 to see if there was a pattern, but again it didn't work.

I might have to read over the Hex explained doccument (on the site) again and see if I am missing anything.

Thanks for the info skot!

Does the hex codes change if a new artist is added in between two working ones?
I think one will get bumped ....
And if theres already a long list of artist configured, when you add a new one near the letter B's then all the codes for the artists after the insertion will get bumped.

I hope you get documentation on the hex code mapping from Sony.
I think there you will be able to figure out the pattern.
If not then thats one helluva nut to crack.

Sorry I cannot be of help,
I seem to be way below your league.
