I have a client who recently had some equipment zapped by a non-direct lightning strike. Three units so far are DOA. Being that the pre-pro is one of the items zapped, it’s really hard to check anything else for full functionality. The pre-pro is a Parasound AVC-1800.

With that info said, I have a few questions:

Do any of you deal with Parasound?

Do you know how I would go about getting an estimate of repairs for this unit, if repairing the unit is feasible?

What would be a suitable replacement if the pre-pro is non repairable?

Or is there a reconditioned 1800 available and is it a valid choice in this instance?

I would appreciate any help. I’m trying to get something together on paper so he could get his system operational again.

Thanks, John

Yes I deal with Parasound! You can just call Parasound and get an RA# to send it in for estimate/repair, they are very fair as well excellent techs. I would if you have to replace it to go with the AVC 2500 which is a much better unit all the way around plus the 1800 had a bad reputation!

Thanks. I'll contact them about the repair.

I'm familiar with the 2500 (used to be a dealer), is the AVC-2500 still available? I don't see it listed on their website.

plus the 1800 had a bad reputation!

We all found this out AFTER these pieces went out in the field already. Had to send this unit to Parasound for a mod about two or three years ago.

We'll see what happens.

Thanks again.

You should send them to Parasound for an estimate of repair. This is the course that is needed if you are filing an insurance claim. Of course it will take forever, and your clients will probably have to dish out for a new set up until insurance sends reimbersment check.
Keep in mind that some items are damaged, but have not completley failed yet. This is frustrating, especially weeks after the initial storm.
I feel for ya. Been there before. Keep track of your labor and management costs.

… I have had equipment service by this people before. http://lavelectronics.com. I go their number from the Pioneer website – be aware that your chances of bringing stuff like that to life are less then 50/50.

What happens if and when Parasound says it is fixable? I'm sure the insurance company isn't going to pay more than they have to, and I'm sure the client isn't going to want or need a second pre-pro.

What would make this easier is if it could be said the units are not cost effective to repair, and we could move on to new equipment. Problem is it's a waiting game.

Yeah, that's why I'm going to try and leave the estimate of damage open until I can get the system operable again.

I am watching my time and necessary materials very closely. I am logging all my time, including time on this board gathering information.

If you guys that have had similar issue occur and would like to share any hints, I would appreciate it. You can email me at JhnZ33 at Netscape dot net.

Thanks again.

email you what?

its simple..get list of equipment damaged, find out what current replacement models are. give customer invoice... insurance pays customer and they pay you for new equipment.as the pro you tell them its more to fix equipmnt than its currently worth.

ebay Item number: 9712592829. You've got about four days to hope people don't bid it up on you.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

dealt with this many times, don't fix the units, there will be more problems later, this should be covered by homeowners policy, so client may like the idea of getting new equipment and having his insurance pay for it, however, if you try to make the claim too big, the will send an adjuster and you will have to take your time to show the adjuster how is broken (lots of time and documentation). After this happens to people, they typically are willing to listen to proposals of additional power protection.
