Yep, grease or silicone , and up in the rainy-assed Northwest, I pop off the grilles and spray a light coating of silicone boot spray on both sides of the grilles so they wont rust as fast, and on the front of the speakers (a light coat), to help repel moisture, and keep it from getting soaked up into the woofer cone especially.
