In order to save inputs on an older system I connected the DVD through the VCR and noticed that the picture became "flaky", ie contrast and brightness would fade in and out. I've also heard other people complaining about the same problem. I assume it is some sort of copy protection between the DVD and VCR manufacturers, but does anybody know the specific mechanism?

My son bought a cheapo Mintek DVD player that plays through a VCR. Apparently the thing is too cheap to pass the macrovision signal! ? !

I use one of those battery powered "video stabilizers" to take care of this on projects where we distribute a DVD around the house and local rooms have a vcr as tuner for an old tv. Works fine for about a year, and then it's time for a service call and a new 9v battery!
