Hi,
Is there a device that will selectively issue the power toggle IR command for an AV component depending on whether it senses that AV component is on or off (either by current draw, or video signal presence)?

Thanks

Do you have any type of control system or remote currently? Does the unit have any type of switched outlet or voltage?
Technology is cheap, Time is expensive.

The unit in question is a satellite receiver. Everything else has discrete on/off codes. I'm using a pronto to control everything. There is a Xantech IR repeater setup to allow things to be operated behind closed doors.

I realize the easy solution is to just leave the receiver on, but it will inevitably get shut off, and confuse the hell out of the person who is just used to it "working".

The least expensive solution I'm aware of is an Ocelot ([Link: appdig.com]) with a light sensor ([Link: appdig.com]).

The light sensor can sense when the receiver's power, or other, LED is on, and the Ocelot can be programmed to issue the power (or any) IR command, based on conditionals (such as the LED being on), when it receives another IR signal.

The Ocelot appears to require that you learn some new software, which typically means a fair amount of learning time, . I would recommend the Xantech gatekeeper. It is very easy to learn to use. Both solutions probably cost more than a new satellite receiver however!!!

Cost more than a new receiver: Yup. But up here in Canada, I don't think any of the receivers have discrete on/offs (for Canadian service of course).

Couple of questions:
-Can I program the gatekeeper without Xantech's special remote (I do have a pronto)?
-What all can an Ocelot do? I'm a comp. sci major and am always up for learning something new.

You can download the codes for the gatekeeper for the pronto. Check out the ocelot online at the link above.

The ocelot is pretty cool, I have one, and use on in some of my jobs.

It's more 'base' level stuff, analog voltages etc, and very modular. Nice stuff.
