Posted this over @ IP, but seems there's more than a few Vidikron devotees here too so I'm x-posting

We recently gained access to Vidikron; I've often heard/read that Vidikron & Runco's plasmas are among the best, but would like to get some firsthand feedback from other CIs who've actually been using the product for a while?

My main concern is that their VPS-50 appears to be working on 2+yr old technology ... from what I can glean this model was introduced in Sept 2003!? Given this, it's hard to believe, then, that this is still at the forefront of plasma display technology? The other concern is that the display doesn't have an HDMI input, though it does have DVI-HDCP (presumably, one could use an HDMI-to-DVI adapter).

Other questions follow...

- How good is Vidikron's scaler? Does it compare favorably with using a good outboard scaler?

- How good is their "progressive stretch" (Intelliwide?) mode when displaying an SD source; how does it differ from, say, Panny's own "just" prog. stretch mode?

- Any issues re: the volume of fans?

- How's the black level, as compared with current gen pannys/pios? Out of curiosity, what glass is Vidikron's panels based on?

- Does the panel lock to "full" aspect ratio with an HD source? For instance, if necessary could one access the ZOOM function?

Any info/feedback is much appreciated; thanks in advance!

I work for a Runco dealer and we move quite a few of their displays.

Yes you can use a HDMI-DVI adaptor. The displays have had some HDCP issues, mostly with cable boxes (I blame the cable box).

Scaler is really good, we never spec outboard scalers so I cannot give you a good comparison.

Their "Intelliwide" seems to be about the best way to modify 4x3 content that I have seen so far.

No loud fan issues so far, we have experienced it quite a bit with our other line (Marantz).

Black levels are good, Runco/Vidikron uses Pioneer glass/ chassis for most if not all of their plasmas.

No, it does not lock (at least the Runcos don't).

I highly recomend you attend the factory training if you can. It is very educational and if you survive it will be a week to remember...
I am a trained professional..... Do not attempt this stunt at home.
