I have a Dentist wanting to install a TV behind his Bathroom mirror. That part is pretty easy. What he say's he saw in another home may be a problem though. He say's that the Tv came on by waving your hand at it. I have a feeling that someone was pulling a slight of hand on him, but thought I would ask for some input.

Why not just tie it in with a motion or occupancy sensor, and use either a Xantech "triggered" 110 outler. OR, use the motion sensor to trigger an IR based remote flasher, etc. (cant remember if RTI has contact closure input or not)

No, I wont install your plasma with an orange extension cord hanging down the wall. www.customdigitalinc.com |

Frank - that would be a Xantech 590-10 relay input to IR output... pretty cool...
B&O = Bang & Olufsen - crazy Danish company that makes silly audio equipment that does silly things like opening the glass doors when you wave your hand in front of it... Try automating that... need a robot...
(can you tell I'm a recovering dealer?)

Yeah, my plan was to do just that using a Clip motion connected to a Control4 system. But...... the tv will come on every time there is motion in the room, not to mention turning off if the commands are not discrete. I realize I can set parameters to handle the "off" problem, but there will be times that the Tv should not come on. The way the customer put it the person just waved his hand in front of the mirror and the tv came on. That would require a specialized sensor like the ones that wake up a touch panel when someone gets close enough to use it. Seems like this would have been a specialized product and not something put together by a CI. I've been looking at different manufacturors but it's like hunting Bigfoot

Ah!!! B&O....... They tried to get me to sell their speakers not long ago. Seemed like a decent product, but I was already speaker poor and didn't need them. Thanks, I'll take a look at their site to see if they are guilty.

pullung off that operation is not that difficult. Any motion dector can trigger a contact closure. The rest most of you can do in your sleep. But I'm always amazed at the gimmicks some people are turned on by. Sometimes they lose track of how important a feature is, and how practical or ofetn it will be used

From the mobile 12v world, get single zone radar sensor & turn the field way down, they are like $15. Use its trigger to activate the Xantech piece. The only thing is, if I remember right, it might have problems with the metal coating on the back of the glass. It will sense through anything but metal. It might work if the reflective coating is like a mylar. I do not know what the reflective coating on the back a 2 way mirror is. Hope that gives you another idea. Maybe mount it inside a jbox or lv mud ring behind a blank plate. You just have to feed it 12vdc, around 500ma. Erik

Probably saw one set up on a motion activated ac control set to a long turn off time so it won't keep resetting itself when there is motion in the crapper... The trick is... you would power up the TV, but then you would need to send a turn-on command to the TV... and what about channel changing etc.?

you would need an electrician, but, why not have the light switch also switch the outlet for the tv, seeing as its a dentist office im sure they arent going to want to spend a lot of money on a lcd, im sure it will be a junk brand with no discretes. probably the cheapest most reliable solution, if its a new build.
