I have a unique mounting situation for a new customer. I am wondering if any of you have ever mounted TV's in or on the ceiling with the screens facing the floor? If so, what method's/produts have you used? This is for a local dentist, who was visiting a dentist in another city when he looked up and saw a TV hanging horizontally on the ceiling, so patients can see it whil lying on their backs. I've seen smaller ones this way, but never a 20". Any suggestions would be helpful!

Thanks

How about a cheap LCD projector pointed at the ceiling creating a 50" picture. Less liability. I personally would not hang a CRT above someones head, maybe a small LCD.
I may be schizophrenic, but at least I have each other.

I was about to go off on some hare-brained mounting scheme when I saw GotGame's LCD suggestion. That is exactly it -- you and your client will be balancing the cost of the display (and there are LCDs that have TV tuners, too) versus the cost of designing, obtaining and installing a heavy mount, along with the liability that you and your client are opened up to if you mount a heavy TV above them.
No need to copy someone else's installation when a more sensible product makes a safer setup.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

I agree completely, but the chances of him going for it are slim to none. He's already signed a release of liability, placing it back on him. I don't want to hang a CRT, but we may have to. It will be a full cage design, suspended with chain from the rafters above the drop ceiling, unless we can find something better.

We did this in a dentist office here in Omaha. We took good measurments of the 19" tv screens and told the General contractor to make the boxes and mount the boxes in the drop ceiling. All we had to do was put them up there facing down and plug em in.

I did it with two 13" TVs at a dentist's office nearby. I drilled thru the cabinet and ran two guy wire like cables, which I attached to the 2x10s above the drop ceiling. 20" would be a bigger deal. Offer to do 13" or, like James did, have a contractor build a box that they will slide into.

Do you people keep your eyes open during dental procedures? What's your favorite dental TV show?

Put them up with 12 pound fishing line and make the power / cable cord look like they are floating. Then it will give the sets the appearance of floating and dream like. If the patient is still tense, the dentist can reach up and give the set a push causing it to swing overhead in a hypnotic fashion... Really... Do it.

We can do it my way, or we can do it my way while I yell. The choice is yours.

It's my understanding that having a CRT facing downward diminishes the life of the tube. (Something about particulates from the deteriorating electron guns raining down on the phosphors...?) True or not, I suppose that any dentist worth his/her cotton cheek wadding won't have any troubled replacing the TV periodically.
