A client I'm working with is on a budget... Looking to spend $3500 or less for his projector... Should I go with the EPSON 550, or SONY VPL-HS51??? I haven't seen the SONY, just read great things about it. I have an EPSON on loan... and it's good, but was wondering if anybody out there has seen them in any video comparisons? This customer is very picky - and I just want to get him the best bang for the buck...

We put in the EPSON 800's all the time and have had no problems a with them We have done a few 550's and were very pleased with them. They are basicly the old 500's with some improvements. I have not had much experance w/sony because Sony does not play with the other kids.

Take a look at the Sharp XVZ2000. Have sold a number of them and never any callbacks.

Best bang for the buck may be the new breed of DMD HD2+ DLPs, like the Mits HC3000, Infocus IN76, or the Optoma HD72. All three street less than $3k, are bright, and have great "real" contrast numbers. I prefer these machines when compared side by side with the aforementioned LCDs. However, they each have some quirks when it comes to mounting, and none have lens shift. An example is the HC3000 - great picture but extreme vertical offset limits placement to tabletop or a really high ceiling.
Just my thoughts.

I'd go with the Epson. I've installed both, and when properly calibrated I greatly prefer the Epson.

But I have to wonder when I see all these killer reviews, and projector of the year awards for the SONY... I won't need lens shift... You have set up BOTH the SONY & EPSON... Hmmmm. I can't really buy SONY "right"... I can - EPSON... but the bottom line is the picture quality. I think(?) It was The Perfect Vision that just gave the SONY "Projector of the year" award... which is pretty cool for a $3500 unit...

I'd give a big huge thumbs up to the Mits 3000. 720 DLP. very, very quiet, great pic and street below $3k now. If lens shift is not a problem, then you should consider it. They are also trying to put teeth into internet selling. Discrete IR power and input control too.
I have one in my showroom right now and love it. I also have the DWIN TV4. Prefer the Mits!

I use the Sony, in our showroom, and for many installs. We like it. Easy to setup, nice lens shift, etc.... and Sony has had a good heritage in the projector market.

The Runco would be the BEST choise as would the Vidikron Vision 10 at $3500. Either would have superior processing, color accurace and ability to be calibrated. These two smoke anything in that price range.

Vidikron Vision 10 at $3500. Calibrated correctly your customer will get the bang for his buck he's looking for.
