I finally did get a new white van, and now I am looking for a component to improve it just a bit.

I was parked in front of our store one day when the UPS driver hauled up to me in reverse and stopped about an inch from my bumper. I was surprised, to say the least! I asked him how he did that and he pointed up at the camera looking down at his bumper. And he pointed out that there are still drivers who have back-up collisions.

Well, I think this is just spiffy, and I have a small camera I can use for it. The problem is the display. I saw a few possibilities at CES, but when I look at the prices, I'm thinking I should just go over to Pep Boys and see if one of their $250 DVD players has an external input.

I ran into this same thing about six months ago -- a client wanted to add an LCD screen to monitor the front door. We could get about a six inch screen for $500, or for fifty bucks less, an Aquos 15". And that's what we did.

I don't want a 15" on my van's console, and I don't want to spend $450, either.

Anybody know of any alternatives?
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Look on Ebay for back up cameras, I have a buddy who wanted one on his H2, so he bought on on Ebay..was with a 4-5" screen and he had it installed on the licence plate frame...part of the kit..Kinda cool

was only around a hundred bucks or so..also said there were color ones too

There's no worse feeling than that millisecond you're sure you are going to die after leaning your chair back a little too far.

I used a few for driveway cams. Good image and great price.

Ditto the Parts Express, or any automotive electronics supplier.
The headrest LCD displays or visor displays can usually be had for $150 or so.

Any 12v electronics distributor.

Great, a distributor that puts confidential dealer prices on their public home page. With friends like that.....
Also take a look in your DBL catalog. Theyve got alot of Pyle monitors.

That is not dealer price. Dealer price isn't much cheaper, but that is not dealer price.
Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Sorry, Ernie, but I have to point this out...

You went over to the UPS driver's 'house', and saw this great new technology (LCD TV), and went to look to buy one for yourself (on the internet) and said "That's too expensive - I want one for half the price that works just as well"

Then you came here and asked us about it.

Noticing any parallels?

I'm not saying that your points and questions aren't valid - just that if some guy came here and asked a similar question about his neighbors new HDTV Plasma, we would all flame him out of here...

Either way, good luck with whatever camera you choose. I was thinking when I first read this that JC Whitney probably has what you want...

The "D" distributor mentioned earlier has some rearview mirror replacements with camera. I have always been partial to those.
Why all the fighting and cussing? Can't Dave play nice? We're just here to learn and have fun. It was a harmless jab, laugh and get over it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Interesting parallels, indeed, except for one thing -- nobody flamed me at all, and even you, while pointing this out, are being nice about it.

So what is different about what I'm asking? Something must have made me feel it was okay, and something made people offer suggestions instead of flaming. I'm not defending this, because I see what you mean, but I am wondering why I got such a positive response when this is so parallel to newbie or DIY posts we see here.

Maybe if this were an autosound installation forum, I would be getting the flames that seem normal!

Anybody have any comments on that twist to this thread? I think it is really interesting when we behave differently from the way we think we would behave.
