I've recently installed three "HT" cabinets with 50šplasma screens. To controll the enclosed equipment I've used the Xantech IR repeaters (480 & 490). I've tried many locations for the receivers but it seems like the radiation from the screen disturbes the IR reception anyway.
Any suggestions or help to avoid this problem would be highly appreciated.

Check out www.audioplex.com .

They have "plasma-proof" IR receivers that look very similar in dimension to Xantech receivers.

Plasmas with class A sheilding were originally designed for boardrooms etc. They emit large amounts of EMI and RFI emissions that confuse the IR sensors. Class B shielding is now being added to most new plasmas to prevent this.
Audioplex (www.audioplex.com) sell IR sensors that they claim will work with all plasmas and connect just like Xantech's. I havent tried them yet, but at Cedia they were demoing them with a Pioneer 502 and they seemed to work fine.
It's such a fine line between stupid, and clever.

You have to use two audioplex IR sensors to make some systems work.....A 40 and a 56.....this will cover all bases for IR control....also you can just make a little rabbit ears configuration behind the plasma just below eye level and bounce the IR off the wall into the IR sensors........To make the install nice I use a double box behind the plasma and place the 40 and 56 module boxes in the box and parallel the wires to feed back to the equipment......Out of sight out of mind!.

I know I can do this, I saw it on TV once....

just use an RTI remote with IRF-6 and mask IR sensors

We had a lot of luck with Xantech 480-00 and a sun 80 filter (also from xantech) This way you can use only one I.R receiver. The filter cuts your range down to 15 to 20 feet.

Oyvind:

Just to add a little but more to what zinon mentioned, Xantech makes all of their infrared receivers in two versions, a regular version, and what they call the "CFL friendly" version. The CFL friendly units were originally marketed to perform well in rooms with lots of sun or florescent light; they also work well with plasmas. The range you encounter will depend on how close/far you locate it from the plasma as well as the specific plasma monitor (some emit more light/noise than others) and remote control you are using.

We have not encountered ang range limitations using pronto remotes in combination with the Xantech IR receivers.

QQQ is right they make a 480-00 and a 480-80 . The 480-80 is CFL friendly. But it's IR carrier Output frequency is only 38 KHZ. The 480-00 Will go up to 60 KHZ. Most cable box's are in the 40's and the new digital box's are 56 KHZ. The SUN 480 is the part number for the filter.

this may sound stuppid, but try a little piece of electrical tape at the top edge of the IR reciever.
It works with too light pollution.

It may sound stupid, but it works. Also, behind a spkr grill, or turned around backwards. Just more "stupid"
suggestions.

one of the first things I do if a receiver is haveing IR noise issues is put a piece of paper on the face of the recieving unit. It is a pretty good filter, and can be left in place in a J-box situation.

I've had good luck with the Xantech "tube style" IR receivers--They come with either a brass or white bezel. They need to be installed into a 1/2" hole. these seem to work much better than "Dinky Links", and tabletop style receivers.

I'll back you up there AV guy.
I have plasmas with tube in the center speaker with no problems.

Installations where I use a dinky link will never ever again be the so called cfl (compact florescent) friendly ones. We accidentally had three of these models and they just have well been broken.. They don't work in any application well enough to sell.. Even a dark room..
