I'm sure this has probably been discussed to death, but a forum search turned up nada. So my question: Is there any way for the old Niles IR sensors (3 wire) to be compatible with the newer brain units that are made for the newer 4 wire sensors? Pardon my ignorance... I got out of this field a year ago, and now my current employer is exploiting my knowledge, even though home theatre is not what we do. I'm just a little rusty when it comes to this stuff.

I think you can drop the STATUS wire, and just hook up the GND, 12v, and Data.

I seem to remember that I tried this when I worked for Tw**t*r (I know, I know...) and I don't recall it working.

Mike has given you accurate information. Drop the status wire and hook up the other three. It will work fine.

If you ask Niles tech support, they will tell you to install a resistor across data and ground (I think). I've used them without it, and they've worked, but there is an official solution. Check with them @ 1800-buyhifi

If memory servers me corretly it is a 180 ohm resistor. I totally forgeto about that, but it does work without the resistor.

Thanks for the help. My next question would be worst case scenario: I have to replace the existing IR sensor with a newer one... The wire run to that location is a 2 conductor w/ shield. I'm expecting a "no" answer, but basically, will newer Niles systems work without the status wire?

Yes. Replace the IR Main unit as well, use the MSU250 (Main unit), MS250 IR Sensor and there new IR Emitters ( MF1V, MF2V or IRB1). Works great,
