do most of you guys have to travel to get to your client base or you set up shop in the area of your client base. company i work for is an hour away from our main client base, we get local work too, but the good jobs are farther away "where the money is". it seems worth it to drive an hour. start at 7-730 be on site by 9 worst case, after gas, load up, and drive.

we are getting more and more work farther away, say 2 - 2.5 hours away. just want to know what you guys do, charge for travel over one hour or do you turn jobs down or what? i mean if its a paying customer its hard to turn it away i can understand but its just so hard to drive 2 hours one way and get much accomplished in a day.

I'll travel if the job is lucrative.

If I don't do the job....one of you guys will :P

We are anywhere from 15 minutes to 2 hours from our "local" clients, and we charge travel time to and from the job site. I think ceied more or less said it, if the client is the right fit for your business, and they are want you to do the job, then they will accept paying for the expenses. BTW, if you go to the same area or job for more than 2 days in a row and the travel time is an hour or more, it is often even money to get a hotel and have a nice dinner(part of travel expenses in the estimate) so that you are fresh and ready in the morning.

I'd vote for the hotel for anything beyond an hour or so.

Most of our clients are less than 1 hour a way.
The projects we have that are farther, we work 12 hour days to cut the travel time down and then use those extra hours for days off.

O.K, along the same lines. When you travel out of town are you paid extra for out of town (overnight) jobs? Do you give a per diem? Obviously I am an employee and not an owner. Very curious.

We generally try not to take jobs that are over one hour away. The money maybe good for the initial installation but who wants to drive over one hour back to the customer if a simple problem happens. A small problem can end up tieing up a truck for over half a day. We are very concerned about our reputation and give hands on assistance to our customers when they need us for any problems.
If you are going to do the job...why not do it the right way?
