I want to share some resources (pictures, sound files, etc.) from other computers, but I am having a heck of a time doing so.

For the life of me, I cannot get a network set up. It has been quite a while since I've set one up.

Anyway, I ran the network wizard, made sure every computer was on the same workgroup, but I still get an error message. (See error message below)



I believe it may be a router setup problem as I cannot even ping other computers, I just get a timeout. Everything is routed through a Linksys BEFSR81 Gateway/Router using DHCP and my DSL modem is connected through it as well.

I'm sure it's got to be the way something is setup, but I am lost at this point. Anyone have any insight?

Maybe you have a firewall like ZoneAlarm where you have to specify allowable addresses? Your router may be 192.168.1.1 or something like that and your computers will have their own addresses. You might go into windows firewall and see what you have their as far as allowing sharing.

Sometimes you have to go to My Computer and your C drive and enable sharing (Win98, maybe XP also?). This machine is 98 and I don't have my laptop running to check XP.

John, for a super member, you forgot something....What operating system are you using on each computer?

Since I am here typoooing, I will Guess Win XP home.

Norton wll do this to me everytime om my office network.

2 computers using XP home, one using XP Pro.

I'm really thinking it's a router configuration problem, just don't know enough about the configuration to get it right.

Maybe someone with Linksys experience could possibly provide a clue, as I have none.

ok i have done tons of wireless so lets see if i can help (cisco et al, no lynksys)..... i assume you want peer to peer since you did not specify

1st.....name each computer and setup work group name( all should be same)
2nd...assign static ip to each computer
3rd....assign subnet
4th....assign gateway
5th.... turn sharing on all computers
6th .....make sure each computer has tcp/ip protocal installed
7th...pray to bill gates and microsoft
8th....check router for sharing...
9th...turn off all firewalls cuz with them on cant see the network
10th.....if you use wirelesss access point you have to specifically tell them its ok to see rest of network...ie...cisco will not let any computer see any other over the wireless access point(default)
11th...when in doubt...punt
12...restart all computers

Hmm. I had a Linksys router a while ago and I believe the default configuration was to allow Windows networking. Have you tried turning off the firewall in the router? Each computer is getting an IP, right?

Check Windows Firewall and make sure it's allowing file sharing or is turned off. Do you have Norton Internet Security or McAfee? You don't really need a software firewall if you have a hardware solution in place. Kill the Norton firewall.

I've never had problems with a Linksys router not allowing file sharing. Typically it's something to do with software on the computers themselves.

I always love it when you buy a new pc and by default it can't connect to a server because of the stupid security software that comes pre-installed on them.

Did you share the specific folder(s) that you want access to?

Seems Norton Internet Security was the culprit.

After the first mention of Norton in this thread (by idodishez), I decided to do a little investigating into Norton's settings. Lo and behold, under Personal firewall>customize>Home networking tab, it seems you need to add the other computers under "Trusted sites" for them to "Talk" to each other.

Now I feel like a dumbass for not checking this out a year ago when I had the same issue and left it be. (By the way, you need to do this on every computer that has Norton installed)

I guess getting out of the Biz before I really needed to learn networking was partially the culprit, not really having a need to network until now being the other.

I never took the time to find out WHY it kept me from sharing files, I just know that if I dis-able Norton temporarily, it lets me proceed as needed. Glad it worked out.

One of these days Ill probably REMOVE Norton all together, and finaly quit having to look at that annoying "renew now" warning.

I hear ya. I hate that renew pop up as well. It ALWAYS pops up at the most inoportune times!
