I posted this over at the Integration Pros website as well.

Ok, it's been a while since I've done anything with A/V in a professional sense. I have a former client (former as in he was a client of my former business which went belly-up) who I still continue to offer support with because of a good-standing long business relationship.

He has an Escient DVDM-100, and called me yesterday with the unit giving him a "Bad login name password" error when he tries to look up new DVDs.

I went there today and tried to do a software update. It displays the message "Connecting to server... Please wait" but it never connects and after about 10 to 15 minutes resets to standby mode.

For the hell of it, I selected "look up all" option. I got the same "bad login name password" after it said "logging in..." for about 5 minutes then imediately after the "Bad Login name password" message it displayed something like "Netconfig.dhcp.error" and right after that "Netconfig.gateway.error"

Anyone have any ideas??

Thanks,

John

Are you using a Dial up connection? Sounds like the DIal Up Provider is no onger accepting the User name and Password. Escient USED to offer a cheap provider speciffically for the FIreballs but they went under a while ago.....

Actually, because this unit is located in a second home (weekend home), in a devolopement in the wooded mountains, no broadband is available. He is using dial-up as it's the only thing available.

He's using his AOL account (yeah, I know, but it's something I guess). THat information is entered into the setup screen and worked fine until 2 days ago.

He was loading a few new DVDs when the issue occured. It found 3 out of the 5, and then gave the "Bad login name password" message. It only gave me the other 2 errors today.

Nothing has changed in the setup menu that I know of, and this guy doesn't like to do anything other than what I instructed him to do for using the unit in a normal manner. He's afraid to get into anything technical for fear of screwing something up. So I doubt he was in there messing around.

So far, I'm thinking it's either something wong with the modem in the Escient piece or something on Escient's end, but don't know which it is and how to tell either way.

Hopefully, someone familiar with the DVDM-100 has seen something like this and can offer some advice.

Did he contact AOL?

I remeber going to a service call once where a gentlemans Satellitel system was not working. Upon arrival I discovered that the system was fine and that he had neglected to pay his bill. He had some friends over and when I went up to him to tell him what was wrong he insisted that I tell him in front ofhis friends instead of having a private conversation....

Was pretty funny....

DOnt assume all is well with AOL....

Checked the account on the computer which sits there and he can dial out and connect to the net with no problem.

But now that you mention it, if he restarts the computer and we go to the Escient and update DVD info, the Escient unit will dial out find 1 or 2 titles, and then it spits up the error again.

Really frustrating.

Sounds like it could be a bad phone connection or dirty phone line. I've done a few remotely accesible security camera Kalatel recorders/viewers that connect through a phone modem when broadband isn't available and those will come up with similar errors or will connect for short periods of time and boot you off when there is phoneline interference.
