Hi and Merry Christmas to all,

Just wanted to know what everyone is using for Wi-fi Routers with long range. As you know us CI companies are doing this more and more.

1. What brands (Hi quality only) are you using.

2. What kind of range are you getting for Both B and G WI-Fi.

3. Model Numbers of a Minimun 4 port wireless B and G router / Hub Enterprise or higher grade that you recogmend.

Thanks

Jason
Still a CI at heart!

We have been putting alot of On q Inceiling WAPs in lately. Motorola make the "guts" of it. I like them alot, they direct the signal out like a upsidedown mushroom cloud. You can stick it in the sweet spot of a home with out having it on a table in the middle of the living room.

As for range I havent yet measured it. I usually use my Axim with a symbol lowpower card. The card/ chipset makes as much or more difference as the WAP itself. I get almost double the range with this card compared to my original linksys or dell trumobile card. I have a Linksys WRT54g router/switch. The WRT54g WAS the best consumer grade WAP, and if you flash the firmware with a hacked version you could pump up the output.

Cisco. I have no model numbers, my only experiance with Cisco is that I put a switch in for the Social Security building. If you go with Cisco you will need to get some Cisco training they do some things their own way.

Something else to remember, Qwest DSL is shipping the Actiontec GT701-WG modem/router. It has a built in NAT firewall, if you were to go into another router/switch with a NAT firewall, you will need to either DMZ to the second router or bridge. The best thing to do is get a modem that doesnt have a NAT firewall built in. That being said double natting isnt an issue if the client has no need to allow connection to a local machine from a outside source. Bittorrent, hosting games (xbox live, or PC games) email servers, web servers etc are some examples of where double NAT will be problem.

I hear good things about Buffalo for the cheap units, but when I was putting them in and standing behind them, it was 3Com or Cisco.

Cisco... or at least we hire a partner that does Cisco for us, plus network security and any backend support that is needed... Calgon, take me away...

If it is on the cheap and can't get out of it, Linksys RV008, RV016, or RV0004 as appropriate plus as many WAP54G (does support PoE) APs as it takes. Range means nothing, only QOS, and you should never expect more than line of site (indoor), if that, in some rare, but harsh environments. I have seen as little as 25' or so with QOS severly degraded by a single flimsy non-metallic wall.

Linksys Speed Boost G and the new Belkin Pre N .. Great results on both.. Did not measure the distance but the Pre N was in a single level 10K sqf house without problems.
I'll let you know tomorrow..

on the cheap sie we will do onq

but the majority if not all have been cisco 350 ruggeds or the cisco 1200' & 1300's

in my opinion why not use the best...and cisco makes the best wireless stuff around

Linksys WRT54G and WAP54Gs to cover wider areas. If there is no other way we will put in a WRE54G if we really have too.

Anyone have a good source for Cisco? We do most of our own network integration & have had some issues w/ Linksys. D-Link's been OK, but with some of the harsh installation environs involved (uninsulated attics mainly) we'd like to find something a little more solid.

Cisco Soho 91 and 841 routers, Linksys switches and Cisco 1131 POE APs. There is just no reason to not use the best for this now mission critical part of our systems. And if you're nervous about Cisco complexity, let me just say that I have NEVER experienced the kind of tech support follow up they give. I had an issue about a month ago with programming on a router and I swear, the guy called and emailed every single day - even when I told him I'd get back to him. It was insane support.

I get mine from D&H.
