Hey! Let's form another "Certification Organization" that doesn't suck!

How hard could it be?

Everybody give me your money, and I'll send you your "certified certificates of certification" to hang on the wall.

Oh yeah, you gotta send me money to take your certification test.

But you gotta send me money to be a member first. Then the money for the certification test. And the postage for the certificate. And the envelope. And the paper. And a portion of the ink cartridge. And the electricity for the printer.....

To help you prepare, here's a sample of the test:

True or False:
Wire is easy to run under carpet.

Which color of wire is faster?
A. Red
B. Blue
C. Green
D. Black and White checkered

Distributed Audio means?
A. Buy your equipment from the local warehouse.
B. Your CD rack fell and Led Zepplin landed in the kitchen, Garth Brooks in the dining room....
C. One speaker on every wall of the dwelling, including exterior.
D. That whiney noise your car stereo makes when you rev the engine.

I'm accepting applications for "charter members" now.

First 5000 responses only.

......and I thought I was in the minority about CEDIA and its money-sucking, useless BS. Every time someone in our industry asks me why I have not become CEDIA certified, I tell them I do not want my self-taught skills to erode....................... and in answer to question 2 in n_stallr's quiz : green - definitely green.

If CEDIA's purpose is to help our industry grow stronger, we are all in trouble.

I love it that Ed says, "If I have offended anyone, I don't care... Get out of the business."...

I have had those days...

At some point you have to stop and look at the real problem. Most people don't want CEDIA to represent our field ,and they also don't want the states to mandate license's but still complain about the "trunk slammers"

Cant have it both ways!!

We need trade license's as other fields have that are enforced on a local level and not a private firm.

And what shall we test? EE theory? programming ability? soldering and crimping? Ability to perform the vector analysis and demonstrate the path eddy currents take? Networking? NEC? RF throry? Capentry? Acoustical analysis and theory, in particular comb filtering of speakers in arrays and sea level? reading a circuit schematic? reading elevations? Ability to define what volocity of propegation is? Ability to establish a connection with Remote Desktop remotely? Equalization of a room? Video calibration of a display? How about taking the "codes" in the LG manuals and construct actual IR signals in both hex and binary? Define bit wise gates and why they are useful tool?

I'd wage that of those participating here perhaps .5 per cent could pass a real engineering course. And do you really need any of those skill sets? Anyone spend much time on the Crestron Yahoo board? See any difference between those participating there and those here? It's not testing I object to but the costs of testing and the investment without any possibility of a return on that investment. If you look at the security industry where state testing exists can anyone claim that a license has been at all beneficial to the public or the industry? The same hacks hack away and inspections are carried out by......electrial inpectors who are unskilled and untrained in such inspections. If 50 ohm coaxial cable is used to carry an audio signal eminating from a 75 ohm connection can anyone demonstrate what the audible results will be? Please show all work. Anyone here able to answer this one?

The defense rests.

Alan's on the money. All certification does is collect money from dealers who have better things to do with it than that. There is not enough money collected to police and track down the unlicensed ones. Believe me.

In CA I was an electronics repair guy for a long time, and state licensing was required (at store level). Back in the 80's every video rental store took in VCRs for repair and were not licensed. They didn't even know there was a board out there that wanted their money and an application filled out. Never enough office personnel at the state to find them.

Forget licensing. It won't accomplish what you are after.
There is no truth anymore. Only assertions. The internet world has no interest in truth, only vindication for preconceived assumptions.
