I'm going to be doing this at my house come the first of the year. I'm going in-wall...

There are two ways to look at this. In-walls look good, and if you use a good quality speaker, sounds good also. An added bonus is in-wall's also keeps the wife happy too. The other side of the coin is speaker box design is a science, and the sound quality will alway sound better than a in-wall speaker. At least if you use a good quality speaker. I won't get into naming brands of speakers, as I have found it's a personal choice of the installer and, or the clients ears. My personal opinion is a speaker in a box designed around the spekers installed in them will always sound better. If you prepare the wall you are installing an in-wall into you can come close, and have a good sounding room. Also, do the math on your room size etc.
Hope this helps Datahead

i dont want to give names...but anyone who has seen past posts by me knows what equipment i have in my house.....
dont want to use triad type speakers with back boxes....i have plaster over plaster board wall is like 1 1/2 inches deep, crazy..... more like cement over plaster board.....
the walls as is will sound fantastic with some fiber glass in them....
either way i go they will sound identicle . i already did a blind a/b test and i could not tell the difference and had no preference.
amp will be ADA or maybe an integra 4.6 not sure yet......
i guess i will do the exact opposite of what i would recommend to my customers just to spite myself.....i would tell customer to do inwall so i guess i will do onwall....then when somone asks....i'll tell them the truth.....i did it because 1 i can 2 to spite myself 3 for a change of pace.....
or i'll hire another pro to install my stuff and tell him to suprise me....
or maybe flip a coin
or rock paper scissors with my wife
i hate doing crap at my own house.....

It depends on the company. We use B&W, so I would probably use FPM on-wall speakers. They are good looking speakers and sound fantastic. Plus, plasma tvs stick off the wall several inches, the FPM series compliment this look.
On the other hand, if I were recessing the tv to put the screen flush it's a no-brainer to put in-wall speakers in.

If your going to spite yourself.......then you should at least do it right. Go get yourself an Aiwa shelf system (or a philips, you can pick the turd) and run the wires exposed. Then lose the remote.

Either way I go, they will sound identical. I already did a blind a/b test. I could not tell the difference and had no preference. There's your answer: it makes no difference sonically, so your choice should be made on looks. If your wall is some non-offensive light color, in-walls will probably look better than "wall wart" speakers. If the wall is some custom color, or faux painted, inwall speakers can be painted to match. So it should definitely be inwalls. Incidentally, as far as the terminology goes, since on-wall speakers sit some inches off the wall, it might be better to call them "bubos" (look this up AND read "The Naked Lunch") or "polyps" than "warts." That's it -- warts sit on the surface, but bubos and polyps have a stem of some sort.

We use the B&W FPM series on-wall speakers with most of our plasma installs. We are very happy with the performance, and they look great too... as long as they are installed properly (spacing). They come in Silver or Black.
