I have a Tatung 46" plasma... The resolution is only 852x480 yet it claims the component input is "HDTV Compatible (1080i)". Would I be wasting my money if I upgraded to a HD Dish PVR? Thanks...

Go for it!
The 'Tatung' doesn't have an HD tuner.
It will still give you an HD picture with an outboard reciever.

All 1080i and 720P source material will be down converted to 480p by the set's internal scaler. Technically, 480P is one of the permitted HD display resolutions. The best way I can explain the difference is distance. The further you sit from the set the less important the resolution. The closer you sit the more important the added resolution. Downconverted HD material will still look better than upconverted SD with the inexpensive scaler built into most displays.

480p is a DTV standard, NOT a HDTV allowed resolution. Still a HD signal will look much better than standard TV, but don't expect HDTV performance.

This is kind of funny, actually. My blackjack dealer a few weeks ago was named Tatung.

Hate to disappoint but, 480p is most certainly not HD. It is the definition (if you'll pardon my use of the word) of EDTV (enhanced definition). Did you pick up the Tatung at Tri-ed?

Did you pick up the Tatung at Tri-ed? I got the tv from BB... $500 open box item. The spec sheet I got from Tatungs site said it was HD. Guess they lied :( Oh, well I want to upgrade to a 50" anyway...

No they didn't lie. It is HD "Compatible" just not "capeable". There is a difference. Compatible means it can "accept" the input, it will just scale it to the native resolution, in this case 480p. Capeable means that it will display a HD signal with the apropriate resolution. Remember that Black and white TVs are "color compatable", in that they will accept a color signal, but all you'll ever see is black and white!
