The first Wega I set up with an A/V system allowed me to go into the menu and turn the internal speakers off; then set the rear panel audio output to FIXED (the only useful way to set it); then go back and turn the speaker back on. The fixed output remained active. The next one or two wouldn't let me do that. Then another worked. Now I'd say 8 out of 10 won't let me - as soon as I turn the speakers back on, the output goes variable.

What a dumb setup. 90% of the clients with A/V systems needing a feed from the TV for audio still have a wife who only wants to turn on the TV and listen in the internal speakers.

I know I can use a VCR for audio out but changing channels with the VCR is not as straightforward. We need to keep it easy.

Am I missing something here?

Appreciate your input.

Make sure you are connecting your Audio Cables to "Monitor Out" and not just a regular audio output.

Yes, this is infuriating. I tell my clients before we ever get to that programming step that there are two different ways to implement audio for TV because TV manufacturers are not consistent brand to brand and even model to model. It has been this way for at least ten years, maybe fifteen.

I tell the clients that we will use a TV's fixed audio output if we can, and a VCR if we have to. If a client thinks it is weird for us to use a VCR for choosing TV channels, I show them the six or seven steps necessary to switch from plain old TV watching* to watching TV with audio through their system -- and those necessary to get back.

Worst of all, of course, is that the manufacturers have no suggestion box that we can get to, no way to get a message to them that they are screwing themselves, their customers, and the installation industry by not simply ALWAYS giving us the fixed output option.

*As for plain old TV watching, I once had an installation with many bells and whistles, including a Sony VCR to VCR editing station and a printer for printing a captured video frame. This lady also wanted the system wired so her three-year old could put in a videotape, turn on the TV, and watch the movie. From this was born the "Just-Watch-The-Damn-TV" mode, which I always supply to people, usually with the VCR playing through channel 3 for this mode only. If you and your customer are comfortable enough for you to say "damn" in front of them, they usually appreciate that you are doing this and get a kick out of the name for it.

Warning, the new Sony 34HD set has a different monitor out setup. They let you adjust in the menu wether it outputs video 1,2,3,4 or monitor. The probelm is that it will not output component inputs 5 or 6 when set to monitor.

Ditto, Ernie. Dumb move, Sony. And yes, it is the monitor out, McNasty. Funny thing is, it worked on *a couple* of these dogs...

Rob,
that is a surprise until you consider that they would have to convert component to NTSC to output video from inputs 5 or 6. If there is ever a VGA output, that also will not be available on the little yellow RCA jack.
