However, with smaller drivers and the markup needed
to cover your time shipping and getting them back,
reconing can't be done for a "fraction of the
price", and in fact may be a push.

I guess I'm just lucky out here. We have an excellent reconing shop that can usually get a kit for almost anything. They do excellent work, and always at a reasonable cost. That's all they do for a living, and they have been in the biz for a couple of decades so it's no surprise they have a wide range of sources for materials.

I vote for PSB Alpha B. Designed at Ottawa's National Research Council where so many other great Canadian speakers are designed. www.psbspeakers.com

I think you have a good point there. I was just thinking that a small woofer might cost less than $20 and reconing plus your cost to get it to him will easily run you that. At that point I'd just make the phone call for new.

We have a reconer 1-1/2 hours away that's done it for 40 years. I feel sorry for him, because there isn't that much biz anymore, with so many small sats and bookshelf speakers. Who buys large floor speakers like they used to? Those 10, 12, and 15" woofers were his bread and butter.
There is no truth anymore. Only assertions. The internet world has no interest in truth, only vindication for preconceived assumptions.

Thanks for the feedback guys.
Tom, yea I think my skill level is up to replacing a couple of drivers but I just didn't see it as a winning proposition for the customer. By the time I mark the drivers up and add the labor in I doubt the cost will be too much less than a new pair. And that still leaves crossovers and tweeters that have been abused for twenty years by six kids and two adults.
Still, you guys have definately made me rethink it a bit. The customer is pretty handy with a screwdriver so I think I'll just tell them to replace the drivers on their own and I'll just sell them the new source electronics and speakers for the living room.
Thanks again.
