need to change some of the bad habits i have developed over the years......
was thinking about d-tools as well......being an old dog, can this be a new trick...is it worth it, ease of use? learning curve? or just give up and be an old dog...lol

actually any feedback on d-tools woud be good...i dont know anyone arounf here that uses it that i could talk to.

The general consensus seems to be: Once it's up and running, it's absolutely great, and indispensible. Getting it up and running, however is a very large undertaking. Only take it on if you are willing to spend a lot of time on it. We've been using it for close to a year, and are only now getting to the point where we can write proposals faster with d-tools than without.

We had D-Tools for a bit over a year and never had the time to use it, we found it cumbersome and So freaking expensive to maintain. We dropped it and moved over to SRS and are beginning to use it now, still starting it up but seems a bit easier to use, we will see in a month or so where we are at.

I have also used the horizon software over the years and liked it for what it was

While at CEDIA management last year, D tools was only used by 3-5% of all attendees I asked, Most hated it or only used very little of it. The usual answer I got was that they used word, excel, horizon, SRS, their own

I woed with Dtools at another company and they had 4-6 people per job just for dtools and swore by it....we didnt have that luxury..we have 1-2 guys for all the jobs to use it

I guess its really a personal preference of what to use

I thought it was a lot more than that. For some reason I thought D-tools was more then SRS, and I was quoted (if I recall correctly) about $5k for SRS at Cedia.
No, I wont install your plasma with an orange extension cord hanging down the wall.

I use Excel, Quick books and Word as well as Viseo.

The trick is really knowing how to use these all in conjunction with each other.

I suggest that you take yourself out of the field for a weekend and then some days and make these programs work for you. You must have a better than entry knowledge of these programs.

If you like what you see in these or any other programs you must stick to them as they become your back bone. You don't need to be wasting time "trying" out alternatives.

Quick books is great because you can link up to your bank in most cases and get downloads.

I know D-Tools and while it is a good program I do better with Excel etc.

The key is knowing the program and all it has to offer. Spend some time really getting to know excel and quickbooks and word. Inthe long run it will be worth it.

We just flushed D-tools this week, tired of the monthly fees and the raising costs. We just bought a new program for cheap cheap and we will start implementing it soon.

Perhaps if the extensive amount of data entry required to get dtools working optimally was bundled in with the price of the package it'd be worth it.

Oh it works, and in my opinion is the only truly comprehensive software for the A/V integration professional. With that being said I am not saying it will be easy to get up to speed or cheap to buy, own or maintain, but if you are serious about being a top shelf integrator it is a necessity. I hope Blake from D-Tools will chime in and add to this, as he knows the product as well as anyone could. If you are looking to start out w/ D-tools, first you really need to get Microsoft Visio down pat, or at least be comfortable with it. and then move on from there.
